• Definition of NDT
Non-destructive testing (NDT) is a set of analysis techniques used in
science/technology industry to evaluate the properties of a material,
component or system _______________ causing harm.

Eddy Current Testing
Eddy current testing is particularly well suited for detecting surface cracks but
can also be used to make electrical conductivity and coating thickness
measurements. Here a small surface probe is scanned over the part surface
in an attempt to detect a crack.

Ultrasonic Imaging
• High resolution images can be produced by plotting signal strength
or time-of-flight using a computer-controlled scanning system.

Common Application of NDT
• Inspection of ___________________
• Inspection _______________________________
• ____________________________ Inspection
Inspection of Raw Products
• Forgings,
• Castings,
• Extrusions,
• etc.
Inspection Following
Secondary Processing
• Machining
• Welding
• Grinding
• Heat treating
• Plating
• etc.
Inspection For
In-Service Damage
• Cracking
• Corrosion
• Erosion/Wear
• Heat Damage
• etc.
Power Plant Inspection
Periodically, power plants are
shutdown for inspection.
Inspectors feed eddy current
probes into heat exchanger tubes
to check for corrosion damage.
• Robotic crawlers
use ultrasound
to inspect the
walls of large
above ground
tanks for signs
of thinning due
to corrosion.
• Cameras on

Aircraft Inspection
Test pressure is normally 30% higher than the design Test pressure is normally 10% higher than the design
pressure pressure
Recommended for high pressure applications Recommended only for low pressure applications
Test media (Water) used is not compressible by pressure Test media (Air) used is compressible by pressure
application application
Energy stored per unit volume of water under test Energy stored per unit volume of compressed air under
pressure is very negligible test pressure is very high
Recommended to prove the strength of equipment Recommended mainly for leak test on equipments which
have already proved their strength by Hydrostatic test
Pressure Relief devices are recommended to control Pressure relief devices are must during test to ensure no
sudden increase in pressure during testing over pressurization
Hydrostatic Testing VS
Pneumatic Testing (cont’)
Hydrostatic Testing Pneumatic Testing
Needs less safety distance to cordon off from man entry Needs large area to be cordoned off during testing as
during test period accidental release of pressure travels long distance due
to high energy stored.
Chances of equipment failures are very low Chances of equipment/ / test apparatus
failures are high
Weight of equipment along with test medium as Weight of equipment with test medium
water is high hence special attention should be given to as air is comparatively less
floor and supporting arrangements
Needs verification and examination of joints and Needs very careful checking of weld joints thoroughly
connections before testing before testing
Test media can be reused or transferred to other place Test media can not be reused or transferred to other
after testing place after testing
Skilled and semi skilled personnel can carry out the test Needs involvement of senior experienced staff to monitor
the test.
Recommended where large volumes are to be tested at If pipe lines are tested should be done with small
same time (example pipe lines ) segmental lengths at a time.
Damages made by failures are less compared to failures Damages made by failures in testing are very huge and
in pneumatic testing extensive
Hydrotest is a regular practice and safe procedure and Needs special attention and safety precautions
can be followed in any work site
