Thank you.
Acknowledgement

I would like to thank Indu mam, who gave me this wonderful

project on symmetry. I enjoyed doing it and also learnt many
fascinating thing about Symmetry.
Secondly, I would also like to thank my parents for their
support. Without them, I think that this project would not
have been made.
INTRODUCTION TO SYMMETRY

Symmetry is all around us. We have so many symmetrical objects that we see. Even our own
bodies are symmetric at a point. Come, let’s dive into the wonderful world of symmetry that
would leave all of us in awe.
Types Of Symmetry:-
Linear Symmetry
If a line divides a given figure into two coincidental parts, then we say that the
figure is symmetrical about the line and the line is called the axis of symmetry or
line of symmetry.
Types of Symmetry
Point Symmetry

A figure is said to posses a point symmetry about a point O, also called the centre of
symmetry. If corresponding to each point P on the figure, there exists a point P’ on the
figure such that P’ lies directly opposite to the point P on the other of the centre O.
DISCUSSION OF ALL THE THREE TYPES OF SYMMETRIES FOR
VARIOUS GEOMETRICAL FIGURES
1) AN EQUILATERAL TRIANGLE ABC

i. LINEAR SYMMETRY- THREE LINES OF SYMMETRY, I.E., THE BISECTORS OF THE

THREE INTERIOR ANGLES.
ii. POINT SYMMETRY- NO POINT SYMMETRY.
iii. ROTATIONAL SYMMETRY- POSSESSES A ROTATIONAL SYMMETRY OF ORDER 3
ABOUT THE POINT OF INTERSECTION O OF THE BISECTORS OF THE INTERIOR
ANGLES.
2) AN ISOSCELES TRIANGLE ABC HAVING AB=AC

i. LINEAR SYMMETRY- ONE LINE OF SYMMETRY, I.E., THE BISECTOR

PQ OF THE ANGLE INCLUDED BETWEEN EQUAL SIDES.
ii. POINT SYMMETRY- NIL
iii. ROTATIONAL SYMMETRY- NIL
3) A SQUARE ABCD

i. LINEAR SYMMETRY- FOUR LINES OF SYMMETRY, I.E., ITS TWO DIAGONALS

AND THE TWO LINES EACH JOINING THE MID-POINTS OF THE OPPOSITE SIDES
OF THE SQUARE.
ii. POSSESSES A POINT SYMMETRY WITH THE POINT OF INTERSECTION O OF ITS
DIAGONALS AS THE CENTRE OF SYMMETRY.
iii. ROTATIONAL SYMMETRY- POSSESSES A ROTATIONAL SYMMETRY OF ORDER 4
ABOUT THE POINT OF INTERSECTION O OF IT’S DIAGONALS.
4) A RECTANGLE ABCD

i. LINEAR SYMMETRY- TWO LINES OF SYMMETRY EACH OF WHICH IS A LINE

JOINING THE MID-POINTS OF TWO OPPOSITE SIDES OF THE RECTANGLE
ii. POINT SYMMETRY- POSSESSES A POINT SYMMETRY WITH THE POINT OF
INTERSECTION O OF ITS DIAGONALS AS THE CENTRE OF SYMMETRY.
iii. ROTATIONAL SYMMETRY- POSSESSES A ROTATIONAL SYMMETRY OF ORDER 2
ABOUT THE POINT OF INTERSECTION O OF ITS DIAGONALS.
A CIRCLE WITH CENTRE O

i. LINEAR SYMMETRY- AN INFINITE NUMBER OF LINES OF SYMMETRY, I.E., ALL

POSSIBLE DIAMETERS OF THE CIRCLE.
ii. POINT SYMMETRY- POSSESSES A POINT SYMMETRY WITH ITS CENTRE O AS THE
CENTRE OF SYMMETRY.
iii. ROTATIONAL SYMMETRY- POSSESSES A ROTATIONAL SYMMETRY OF AN INFINITE
ORDER ABOUT THE CENTRE O.
