What is Vocabulary?
The term “vocabulary” refers to a list or collection of words or phrases, usually
alphabetically arranged and explained or defined.

It can also refer to all the words known and used by a particular person or all the word that
exist in a particular language or subject.

Vocabulary is fundamental to language acquisition, literacy development, and


communication.
How to Teach Vocabulary to the
Young Learners?
• Use visuals: Such as objects, puppets, or cut-out figures to introduce vocabulary.
Gestures are also great method to teach the young learners.

• Play vocabulary games: Make the class enjoyable by using games for teaching
vocabulary.

• Write short stories: This encourage students to use the vocabulary words, which
can help them practice using the words for sentences.

• Introduce words one at a time: Introduce each new word one at a time and have
students repeat the word.
Fun Games to Play to Teach Vocabulary
• Word Bingo: Create bingo cards with vocabulary words and have students mark off
the words as they are called out.
• Charades: Students act out vocabulary words while their classmates guess what the
word is.
• Memory Game: Create pairs of cards with vocabulary words and have students
match them.
• Scavenger Hunt: Have students search for vocabulary words in books, magazines, or
articles.
• Vocabulary Race: Divide students into teams and have them race to write down as
many vocabulary as they can in a set amount of time.
• Word Jumble: Scramble vocabulary words and have students unscramble them.
