WHAT MAKES A GREAT

LEADER

Angelica P. Demetrio
Great leaders find the balance between
business foresight, performance, and
character. They have vision, courage,
integrity, humility and focus along with
the ability to plan strategically and
catalyze cooperation among their team.

1. Great leaders have a vision... They can see into the future. They
have a clear, exciting idea of where they are going and what they
try to accomplish and are excellent at strategic planning
2. One of the more important qualities of a good leader is courage.
Having the quality of courage means that you are willing to take risks in
the achievement of your goals with no assurance of success. Because
there is no certainty in life or business, every commitment you make and
every action you take entails a risk of some kind. Among the seven
leadership qualities, courage is the most identifiable outward trait.
3. The core of integrity is truthfulness. It is honesty in
everything they do, both internally and externally.
Integrity requires that always tell the truth to all people,
in every situation. Truthfulness is the foundation quality
that is necessary for the success of any business.
4. Humility doesn't mean that you're weak or unsure of
yourself. It means that you have the self-confidence and self-
awareness to recognize the value of others without feeling
threatened. It means that you are willing to admit you could be
wrong, that you recognize you may not have all the answers. It
means that you give credit where credit is due - which many
people struggle to do.
5. Great leaders are outstanding at strategic planning.
It's another one of the more important leadership
strengths. They have the ability to look ahead, to
anticipate with some accuracy where their
organization is going.
6. Leaders always focus on the needs of the
company or any organization and thesituation.
Leaders focus on results, on what must be achieved
by themselves, byothers, and by the company.
Great leaders focus on strengths, in them and in
others.
7. Leaders have the ability to get everyone working
together which is essential to success. Leadership
is the ability to get people to work for you because
they want to.
8. Another characteristic of a good leader is the
ability to effectively and persuasively. Clear
communication begins with the ability to stop,
listen, think, and proceed slowly.
9. It allows you to gain trust with your team and
keep the focus on the vision. When leaders are
dishonest and ingenuine, it becomes difficult to
keep everyone moving in the same direction.
10. As leaders, we may be hyper-focused on our own
goals and what’s at stake. But, if we are looking for
how to be a better leader, we must also understand
that without our team, goals cannot be reached.
LEADERSHIP THEORIES
TRAIT THEORY

Emphasizes the traits or qualities of leaders which lead

to their effectiveness. However, it could not establish
the traits that should be common to all leaders. This also
fails to explain the instances of leadership failures,
where leaders failed despite possessing the required
traits.

Presentation title 14
BEHAVIORAL THEORY

Seeks to identify the behaviors of leaders that lead to

their leadership success. Leaders may demonstrate
task-oriented or people-oriented behaviors and may
make decisions using authoritarian, democratic, or
laissez-faire styles. However, this theory overlooks
the situational factors and the environment in which
behaviors are demonstrated .

CHARISMATIC LEADERSHIP THEORY

A charismatic leader commands authority not by the

virtue of a formal position but by the virtue of
charismatic personality. Envisioning, empathy and
empowerment are the three core components of a
charismatic leader.

Presentation title 16
TRANSACTIONAL LEADERSHIP THEORY

Bases leadership on a system of rewards and

punishments that are contingent upon the
performance of the followers. It is task and
outcome-oriented.

Presentation title 17
TRANSFORMATIONAL LEADERSHIP THEORY

Inspires followers with their vision and

personality to change expectations, perceptions,
and motivations for working towards common
goals.

FOLLOWERSHIP THEORIES
Cleofe (2016) in her book on Personal Development said that the role of a
follower is equally important in the realization of a group's common goal.
For a society to be peaceful, orderly and productive, members must be
willing to follow. Even leaders must be willing to shift into and out of their
role under certain circumstances to influence their followers and achieve
common goals. Cleofe (2016) also cited some of the things expected from an
effective follower:

01
A make-it-happen attitude

Leaders expect results from their followers as they do not

need excuses. Tasks become smoother when followers can
complete the task and get things done. Followers
contribute to the leader's success when they
enthusiastically exert efforts to finish their job on time.

02
A willingness to collaborate

Collaboration is important in the realization of the

common goal. Incredible results are seen when
members are open to the uniqueness of each and
the group benefits from collaboration .

03
The passion to drive your own growth

Leaders seek for followers who want to develop

themselves. The best followers are not those who have
skills, but those who take responsibility to
continuously improve their abilities.
