Religion as a social
reality/phenomenon
- Beliefs get power from
being socially enacted
repeatedly through rituals
and social action
- By acting together, the
community of believers begins
to accept the group’s symbolic
interpretations of the world as
if they were tangible,
authentic, and real rather than
merely interpretation.
By adopting a social standpoint
•Values and beliefs can
inform a particular
religious group’s
behavior in the public
sphere.

- e.g. Iglesia ni Christo – endorses
specific candidates during elections
- other religious group have fielded
their own leaders and members to
run for office.
