WHAT IS COMPUTER?

• An electronic machine that can store, find and

arrange information, calculate amounts and
control other machines.
• There are different types of computer like
Micro computers, Mini computers, Mainframe
computers, Super computers, etc.
• In this presentation, we will learn about
different-different types of computers.
 TYPES OF COMPUTER
• There are different types of computer with respect
to speed, size and memory (storage capacity).
Computers can be classified into the following types:
1. Micro Computers (Personal computers)
2. Mini Computers
3. Mainframe Computers
4. Super Computers
5. Server Computer
6. Workstation Computer
MICRO COMPUTERS
• A microcomputer is also known as
Personal computers (PCs).
• These computers are used by a single
person at a time.
• These computers are small in size and
less in cost.
• Smart phones, Laptop computers are
the examples of microcomputer.
 MINI COMPUTERS
• Computer that is smaller, less expensive, and less powerful
than a mainframe or supercomputer but more expensive and
more powerful than a personal computer is called a mini
computer.

• Several hundred users can use it at the same time.

• Minicomputers were used for scientific and engineering

computations, business transaction processing, file handling,
and database management.
• Examples: VAX computer.
 MAINFRAME COMPUTERS
• Mainframe computers are big computers
with large memory and high speed.
• These are much more powerful than mini
computers.
• For example, the IBM z13 mainframe is
capable of processing 2.5 billion
transactions per day.
 SUPER COMPUTERS
• A supercomputer is a computer which is
the most powerful and biggest
computers in the world today.
• These computers are used for weather
forecasting, satellite control, etc.
• Examples: CRAY, PARAM, etc.
 SERVER COMPUTER
• A server is a computer, equipped with
specific programs and /or hardware, to
enable it to offer services to other computers
(clients) on its network (connected to it).
• The machine (computer- along with its
software) that serves other computers is
called the server.
WORKSTATION COMPUTER
• A high-performance computer
system that is basically designed for
a single user and has advanced
graphics capabilities, large storage
capacity, and a powerful central
processing unit.
