Beautiful When It Rains
I sit by the dining table as I write this account. From time to time I stand
up to check on the fish I am cooking for breakfast. By now, the room should
have smelt of fish and oil combined, the odor sticking to my hair and pajamas.
But the scent of pine blown by the strong wind into the tiny cracks of the
window still prevailed.

INTRODUCTION: When he was young, Airick had set his eyes on one
thing: to be an Atenean.
Mang Dani bought his first jeepney 80 years ago for a hundred thousand pesos. He is a father of four
children and a loving husband to his wife. Being the driver that he is, it is deemed that the jeepney is their main
source of income.
Mang Dani only finished second grade in primary school. He can not read nor write well. To help him
in his daily work, his wife is his daily company, and their children left at home are taken care of by their eldest
child. Mang Dani can not afford automotive repairs. So, to avoid further damage, he makes sure that he drives
safely on the way to the
different destinations.
The Department of Transportation launched the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program in 2017.
The aim of the said program is to make the Philippine transport system efficient and environment-friendly by the
next three years. The program involves the phasing out of public utility vehicles like jeepneys and buses that are
at least 15 years old. The old vehicles will be replaced by new models that are safer, more comfortable for the
commutes, and friendly to the environment.
It is pleasant to the ears to hear the objectives of the PUVMP. However, this program is said to be “anti-
poor” based on some transport groups. The replacement units of the vehicles are way too
Pricey, especially for small-time operators. According to the Landbank of the Philippines, each jeep replacement
will cost PHP 1.6 million, and with added six percent of interest, a new jeepney can cost
PHP 2.1 million, a lot more expensive than Mang Dani’s hundred thousand jeep.

Sweet Lover’s Dilemma
-Rebecca Kelsey C. Famoso
The drivers and operators who were not in favor of the program showed their
opposition by doing transport strikes as their protest against the program. The latest
nationwide transport strike was on September 30, 2019, which made the commuters suffer
even if the mayors of affected cities already
suspended the classes to avoid a big hassle.
Many Mang Dani’s can not afford to replace their jeepneys. The new one requires a
Euro-4-compliant engine that will lessen the pollution brought by the smoke. Some proposed
additional features that the old jeepneys do not have are CCTV (closed circuit television)
cameras, GPS (Global Positioning System),
automated fare collection systems, front-facing seats, and new exits on the right-hand side.
The DOTr claims that the economic and environmental benefits of the PUVMP will be
experienced by drivers and commuters. However, these are people with cases similar to Mang
Dani who can not shoulder the PHP 2 million for a new unit of jeepney.
The sectors of transportation must hear out these conditions as it is the main factor that
stops the program itself.

Before Gal Gadot, there was Irene Habijan- my Wonder WoMom
Everyone is looking for Wonder Woman in Israel, But I have found her in
the Philippines.
In 1998, I was diagnosed with Rheumatic Heart Disease. It was
excruciatingly painful to move every part of my body because my joints were
extremely sore. I cried every time I tried because I couldn’t endure the pain. So I
had no choice but to stay on bed- lonely, scared and a bit depressed.
But in the middle of my agony, my Wonder Woman was always there to
save me.
I told her that 1 piece of Chickenjoy helped in easing the pain. So she would
frequent buy Jollibee and come home with a 2-piece Chickenjoy.
Every time I felt depressed, she would bring me to Sta. Lucia’s World of
Fun. She knew that singing in Celine Dion’s “Heart Will Go On” would energize
me and make me happy.
Having RHD also hindered me from school and this got me anxious and
pressured about my academic standing. So she went to my school to ask my
teachers about our lessons and how could I catch up with the class. And it was a
good thing that she was a teacher in profession.
I knew she was in pain seeing me in bed looking powerless and defeated.
But she never showed that to me. Instead she would always cheer me up with plans
of the things that we would be doing after I win over the disease.
And whenever I asked her, “Ma, gagaling ba ako?” she told me that I should
not doubt because God was in control of my life. Then, we would hold hands,
prayed together, and claimed to my complete healing.
Fast forward to 2017. I just turned 30 last July 11- healthy, strong and
beautiful! 19 years ago my heart is sick, but my mama’s love was the cure.
“Only love will truly save the world,” said Wonder Woman. And without
doubt, my own Wonder Woman’s love saved my world!
