STUDENTS’ PERSPECTIVE ON SMARTPHONE USAGE

FOR THEIR READING INTEREST

BACKGROUND
 Reading is one of several skills in English that must be mastered by students at the junior
high school level. Students must learn reading skills because reading is an important aspect
for every student in learning English. Reading is central to education that's the problem
explained that reading is an important element in a process studying in school. Reading is
also one of the main doors to have access to knowledge and information. Reading is one of
the most important ways to learn English. Reading is mainly for the reader to fully
understand the meaning intended by the researcher, reading is not enough for the reader to
understand a set of words in a sentence, readers also need to understand the text in order to
grasp the message and readable information. Reading well will improve students' ability to
gather ideas for communication.
 Smartphones always appear by presenting the latest technology that makes human activities
more practical. Smartphones are equipped with various applications or features that can help
their use, namely, cameras, video calls, telephone, sms, email, games, google, microsoft word,
and others. The application can make every person's work easier. Smartphones have almost
the same functions and systems as computers, they can browse the web and other
information, but the difference is their physical form. A smartphone that is easier and more
practical to carry anywhere with the size of a hand grip. Students also easily use it to get
ebooks, and other information they want.
 Interest in reading is growing and making reading a culture has the potential to put a country
at its best. The ideal nation is the noble aspiration of a nation, because the ideal nation is the
characteristic of an advanced and civilized nation. Ideal conditions must be created to have
the right path.
PROBLEM
Eight students in seventh grade at MTs Riyadhus Shalihin
had problems with their interest in reading, therefore researchers
were interested in applying reading learning methods with
smartphones. In this study the researcher conducted preliminary
research before using the learning method with smartphones, in
this initial study the researcher used interview observations, and
the results of observations when the researcher went directly to
class during the learning took place, it was seen that students were
less interested in reading, because they felt bored, lacked
motivation, and lack of understanding in learning English. Only a
few students seemed enthusiastic in learning, so that the average
reading ability of students was still lacking. Even so, there are
several learning methods to help interest in reading. Therefore,
researchers are interested in trying to use smartphones for
students' interest in reading.

1. The teacher explain learning objectives to students, so they can provide


an understanding of the methods of learning when using smartphones.
