The way mobile phone influences student speaking and writing ability

Introduction

Mobile phone have been started to emerge in the Philippines during the 1990, and

become popular until today. The growth of mobile phone is high especially in the developing

countries (Ravichandran,2009). Mobile phone influences student with a two conclusion either

positive or negative due to student maturity level and mindset. There are student knows their

limitation and there are student addicted to it. In communication, mobiles phone was one of the

fastest way to text and talk with their friends, teachers, classmates, and families. Call is a verbal

way to communicate, students used calls in educational purposes and social matters. They were

using missed calls for different purposes like some students used a missed call for call back

purpose and some students used it for reminding, caring, teasing and many more. Text

messaging is non-verbal way to communicate, mostly involved words that were either shortened

or used symbols. The positive effect of mobile phones is that student rich in information access

but some students affects spelling like using shortcut, ex. IDK should be I don’t know, grammar

which there are different ways of how an student to construct their sentences which leads for

them to be confused, and vocabulary choice which difficulty in pronouncing words.

Purpose of the study

Some student are lack in accessing information because of not using mobile phones. The

biggest advantage of the mobile phone is the ease of communication. Students can have 24/7

access to their peers, their teachers, their parents, and their friends, meaning that any doubt to be

solved or information to be shared can be done in a matter of minutes. But , Student should not

be concerning only about the positive impact of mobile phones in their studies, they should also
consider the negative impact of it. Students were of the view that mobile text messaging was

harming students’ writing skills (Russell, 2010).

Preliminary literature review

Presently mobile phone is also used as a tool of entertainment along with communication.

Most of the students use mobiles for setting alarm, giving missed calls to intimate classmates and

make calls for family communication (Nawaz & Ahmad, 2012). Mobile usage has a favorable

effect on students' connections with their families and peers. Mobile phones are being positively

utilized in the organization of social relations by the young generation in order to retain their

social connections. In the poor countries, mobile phone calls are regarded as expensive in

comparison to SMS. Students in particular use messaging platforms to connect with friends and

family. Particularly in an academic setting, SMS text messaging increases students' propensity to

employ unconventional word choices and contracted English word forms in their coursework,

exams, and research projects. According to Yousaf and Ahmad's (2013) research, university

students' writing abilities suffer more adversely the more exposure they have to SMS. The use of

text messaging has affected how individuals communicate verbally and in writing. Additionally,

their investigation showed that SMS texts are written by consciously or unconsciously neglecting

orthography. According to widely held beliefs, texting has emerged as a twenty-first-century fad

with a highly distinctive colorful style that is full of contractions.and unconventional language

usage by a young generation that is unconcerned with standards

secondary data with the used of the given methodology. The quantitative data created can be

assessed either through numerical calculations or graphs or tables (descriptive analysis).
