CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

The impact of mobile phone usage on student learning is a topic of interest

worldwide. With the widespread availability and use of mobile phones among students,

understanding their influence on learning outcomes is crucial. Research conducted

globally has provided insights into the potential benefits and drawbacks of mobile

phone usage in educational contexts, contributing to the development of strategies and

policies to optimize learning environments. (Kuznekoff ,2013)

The local context, the impact of mobile phone usage on students learning is of

particular importance for hums students. These students are exposed to a wide range of

subjects that require deep understanding, critical analysis, and effective communication

skills. It is essential to examine how mobile phone usage effects their learning

experience, academic performance, study habits, and overall educational outcomes. This

study aims to address this gap in knowledge and provide insights specific to the local

educational context. (Kuznekoff ,2013).

The aim of this study is to investigate the impact of mobile phone usage on the

learning outcomes of HUMSS Students. It seeks to explore the relationship between

mobile phone usage patterns, student engagement, academic performance, study habits,

concentration, and information retention. By examining these factors, the study aims to
iii

provide a comprehensive understanding of how mobile phone usage influences the

learning experiences of HUMSS Students. The findings will contribute educational

practices, policies, and interventions that promote effective and efficient learning in the

context of mobile phone usage. Lepp et al. (2015)

Statement of the Problem

The main goal of this study is to determine whether the senior high school
students’ phone addiction has a connection to senior high school students’ academic
performance this school year.
Specifically, the study aims to answer the following questions:

1. What is the profile of Grade 12 HUMSS Students of Dr. Vicente F. Gustilo Memorial

National High School in terms of:

1.1 Age

1.2 Sex

2. How to limit the use of cellphones especially in children?

3. What impact does the use of cellphone in class have on student engagement?

4. What is the effect of cellphone use in class on the culture and learning

environment of students?

5. How do teachers perceive the use of cellphone in their classrooms?

6. How do cellphones in class affect student mental health and wellbeing?

7. How do students perceive the use of cellphones in their classrooms?

Theoretical Framework
iv

In order to fully understand the impact of mobile phone usage on student

learning, it is important to consider the context in which mobile phones are being used.

According to Kuznekoff (2013), “the context in which mobile devices are used matters,

and the impact of mobile devices on learning can be influenced by a range of factors,

such as the type of task, the subject matter, and the student’s prior knowledge and skills”

(p. 8). Therefore, it is essential to consider the specific context in which mobile phones

are being used in the classroom and to develop strategies that promote appropriate use

and minimize distractions.

Background

Hypothesis

Several studies have provided evidence supporting the hypothesis that mobile

phone usage can negatively impact student learning. For example, a study published in

Computers in Human Behavior in 2015 by Lepp et al. found that high frequency and

duration of mobile phone use were associated with lower academic performance among

college students. Additionally, a study by Kuznekoff 2013 revealed that students who
v

used their mobile phones for non-academic purposes during class scored lower on a quiz

compared to those who did not use their phones.

Significance of the Study

This study and its results will provide information and insights about of Impact of

Mobile Phone Usage on Student Learning.

Students – This study suggest that smartphones can significantly benefit student-centered

learning and can be used in various disciplines and stages of education.

Present Researchers- As a student, this will aid the researchers to be aware and how to cope up

the challenges and factors that the Impact of Mobile Phone Usage encounters in everyday and

not only benefits the individuals but also contributes to improved educational outcomes.

Future Researchers- The findings of this study will be useful source of information for future.

Scope and Limitation of the Study

Greatest struggle of Impact of Mobile Phone Usage on Student, the conversation partners

are participated in the study that was conducted by the researchers interview Dr. Vicente F.

Gustilo Memorial National High School Questionnaire therefore the selected respondents must fit

to the qualifications for they would serve as a unique conversational partner of the study.

The respondent must be of Impact of Mobile Phone Usage on Student. The researchers

served as the instrument to gather the data and a voice recorder to clarify the words during the

interview 25 below and 30 above not covered by study.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

A review of literature is a classification and evaluation of what accredited

scholars and researchers have written on a topic, organized according to a guiding

concept such as a research objective, thesis or the problem / issue to be addressed. It is

the scholarly core of the dissertation. It is an analysis and synthesis of the source

materials, written in a specific style which flows from broad to narrow and takes into

account both the theoretical and empirical issues. The main purpose of the review of

literature is to report on original research or experimentation in order to make such

information available to the rest of the scholarly world.

Theme 1: The Negative Impacts of Phone Addiction

Distraction of Phone usage among Students

The impact of mobile phone usage, during class lecture on students three different

study groups (control, low-distraction, and high-distraction) watched a video lecture, took

notes on that lecture, and took two learning assessments after watching the lecture. Smart

success is negatively affected by excessive phone use and the students who were not

using their mobile phones wrote down 62% more information in their notes, took more

phone addiction has negative impacts on student learning and overall academic

performance. The greater the use of a phone while studying, the greater the negative

impact on learning. The skills and cognitive abilities students needed for academic

detailed notes, were able to recall more detailed information from the lecture.

(Kuznekoff, 2013)

The presented research focused to examine the extent of Mobile Phone usage and

its influence on the academic performance of the HUMSS Student. A survey was

conducted among 50 students going of Dr. Vicente F. Gustilo Memorial National High

School to get the results. While selecting the sample two criteria were taken into

consideration. The participants should be going students and mobile phone users. The

findings of the study suggest that Mobile Phone usage effect the of students as they stuck

to this device during their classes. Also, the results indicate that the Mobile Phone usage

has become an addiction among the young students.

Theme 2: The Usage of Mobile Devices

Academic Performance

The mobile phone has been conspicuously proliferated in the past decades, little is

known about its influence; especially its effect on student learning and academic

performance. Although there is a growing interest in mobile devices and their correlates

and consequences for children, effects vary across related studies and the magnitude of

the overall effect remains unclear. (Kate, Aaron W, 2018)

The recent rapid increase in mobile phone usage has influenced multiple aspects

of our daily lives, particularly those of Students. Therefore, the aim of the current study is

to determine the influence of the mobile phone usage on among male and female students

of Jahangirnagar University, Bangladesh. A face-to-face survey was conducted among

ix

274 students which include 159 male students and 115 female students ranging from first

year to second year from different departments of Jahangirnagar University, Bangladesh.

Results depict that gender, age and relationship with opposite sex have a significant

positive effect on students' (Hossain, 2019).
