Defination of term
Mobile phones have a positive impact that is useful for learning online,
looking for material that we do not understand on the internet, and others. On the
other hand researchers also discovered a negative relationship between mobile
phone usage and students' academic performance, namely on students who are
addicted to using mobile phones, cheat on assignments, lack focus in learning,
etc.
This research will focused on Importance and Effects of Mobile Phones to the
Students of Carranglan National High School as the findings will redound to the benefit
to the students as it will enhance their discipline and knowledge into using mobile
phones moderately and correctly.
Students
The students are the most benefited to this study as they will gain a proper
knowledge on the effects of mobile phones in their academic performance. As they will
be enlightened to know the truth.
Parents
The parents is the guardians of our life. this research would let the parents
understand one of the factors of why their children get better grades or lower grades
instead and they will be aware of the importance and effect of mobile phones on the
children’s learning achievement, thus they could serve as a watch-dog to their children
so as to guide them on what are needed.
Teachers
The teachers are called as our second parents. They will be able to learn the
Importance and effects of mobile phones in the academic performance of the students.
By this they will be enlightened on how to control, discipline and teach the students.
School be enlightened to know the truth. Teachers would be more considerate about
the idea that smart phones are not at all bad to a students learning performance, but
also, this research will show them to what extent does mobile phones are useful to a
class and its limitations.
Mobile Learning
Escape Theory Theory
This research will serve as a basis for next any other researches that are related to
the said topic or problem.
THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK
A theory is a set of interrelated concepts, definitions, and propositions that
explains or predicts events or situations by specifying relations among variables. Theory
is heuristic for it stimulates and guides further development for knowledge.
Escape Theory (Faber R. J., O’Guinn T. C) has been used to explain the
effects of mobile phone usage. Mobile phones helps the affected individual escape
negative events or feelings. Mobile phones may be used to avoid larger, more pressing
problems. A constant focus on the “here and now” helps the cellphone user avoid
reflecting on issues that are disconcerting.
The Theory of mobile learning (Sharples, Taylor, & Vavoula, 2015)
isessential when thinking of the role of mobility and communication in learning
environments. This theory states the possible advantage and disadvantage of using
mobile phones.
SCOPE AND LIMITATION
The study focused on the Use of Mobile Phones to the students of the
Carranglan National High School. The respondents of this study are limited to students
who currently studying at CNHS in this School Year 2022-2023. The researchers will
select different students,12 students (2 students each grade level).
RESEARCH LOCALE
This study will be conducted at Carranglan National High school, Carranglan
Nueva Ecija, School Year 2022-2023.
DEFINITION OF TERM
This study aims to know not only the importance, effect, purpose and
responsibilities of every students of CNHS, on how to use Mobile Phones, but also to
understand every important meaning of definition of terms we research.
was "a significant and negative predictor of college students' academic performance,
objectively measured as cumulative GPA." (Lepp, et al. 2015) So, the time a student
spent in front their mobile screen also played a vast role on their academic
performance, instead of using it for reading books, reviewing notes, and doing school
works, students tend to use it more for entertainment and less for education as stressed
by different researchers, for example from the observation of Nathia, et al. (2013);
Nalwa&Anand, (2003) states that “as mobile phones in societies increases, there is a
large growth in the use of mobile phones especially among the youth. This trend is
followed by the fast growth in use of online social networking services (SNS). Extensive
use of technology can lead to addiction. This study finds that the use of SNS mobile
applications is a significant predictor of mobile addiction.” Additionally, from researches
of Gergen (2002); Halpen (2003); and Franzini (2002) states that “researchers have
discovered that the use of mobile phone in schools is problematic. As Ling and
Helmerson (2000) states, the mobile phone is ‘at cross purpose with the mission of the
school’. While in school students are supposed to take on their prescribed roles as
students with full concentration on their studies and free from contact with the outside
world. However, the mobile phone gives room to blending students’ roles with other
roles thus distracting and disrupting the students’ academic work.” Due to this sanction,
three researches have all-in-one common findings about the mobile addiction
phenomenon: “an increasing reliance on cell-phones among young adults, and college
students may signal the evolution of cell-phone use from a habit to an addiction.
Although the concept of addiction has multiple definitions, traditionally it has been
described as the repeated use of a substance despite the negative consequences
suffered by the addicted individual.” (Alavi, et al. 2012; Stieglitz&Brockmann, 2013 and
S. & A. Davey, 2015) In other words, mobile addiction then is a conscious action of
mobile addicts, but they tend to see it on different perspective than referring it as
“addiction” as explained by the a study of Chakraborty, et al. (2010), that although
various etiological theories could be used to explain which cell-phone activities are most
likely to lead to addiction (e.g., Escape Theory), Learning theory seems particularly
appropriate. Learning Theory emphasizes, among other things, the rewards gained from
various cell-phone activities. So as stated, there are possible theories of mobile phone
addiction, the Escape and Learning Theory. Escape Theory which literally means “to get
away” from this reality and be present somewhere at the world of mobile phone and
Learning Theory in which a mobile-user gains satisfaction to the rewards he/she gain
from different mobile applications. Another research mentioned the term “smartphone
poisoning” which means “connection to poisoning phenomena habitually using a
smartphone without special purpose for and showing anxiety and restlessness without a
smart phone.” (Park, et al., 2014) which is an obvious effect of smartphone addiction.

METHODOLOGY
TYPE OF RESEARCH
The research method used in this study is Qualitative Research Method,
wherein this study describes situations and does not determine the cause and effect.
This study attempts to determine, describe or identify what are the importance and the
good, bad effects of mobile phones to the students of Carranglan National High School.
SAMPLING METHOD
Snowball is the sampling method that has been used in this study wherein we
select based on characteristics of a population and study.
DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE
The data collection consisted of the distribution of the Semi- structured
interviews to the students enrolled in Carranglan National High School. set of 8
standardized questions was administrated with a purposive returned by the
respondents. The researcher asked permission to the teachers to distribute and collect
the surveys in the classroom.
DATA ANALYSIS
After collecting the reciprocated data from the respondents, all answers and
responses will be evaluated, and ranked using Thematic Analysis Approach -(method
for analyzing qualitative data that involves reading through a set of data and looking for
patters in the meaning of the data to find themes). The data collected were analyzed
qualitatively. Qualitative data were obtained from the open-ended items to the students
questionnaires. Result will determine the use of mobile Phones to the Students of
Carranglan National High School.

Playing Games
The answers of the respondents in almost all the 5 questions that were asked reflects
how they use mobile phones. It indicated particularly in the answers in the second
questions that students connect and communicate with other people through social
media. Among the mentioned social media applications are Facebook, Messenger, and
Instagram. They also use it for a way of entertainment through reading stories, watching
videos and playing games. Mobile phones also serve as students’ way of looking up
information but mostly when their circumstance requires them particularly for academic
purpose.
Usage Purpose
Mobile phone usage of students is mainly due to entertainment and connection they find
through social media, videos, readings, and games. This affirms to the result of the
study conducted by Ahmed A. (2022), to study the use of mobile phone by mass
communication students of Yarmouk University shows that there is an extensive use of
mobile phones and it serves as the student’s source of entertainment, communication
and their source of information.

Academic
Students who use mobile phones enjoy positive effects in their usage. According to the
answer of the responses, positive effect outweighs the negative. All the respondents of
the study said that their phone help them in looking for information and unfamiliar words
online. One respondent elaborated, “It helped me by searching the definitions of
something I don’t know”. Mobile phone aid students in their learning process. It assists
student at answering their homework and activities and giving them necessary
information. A study of Yuen F.C., et.al. (2022) realized that mobile phone usage has a
social influence that positively influence students’ academic behavior. Furthermore,
Irshad A.D. (2022) indicates that the device provides technological features that allows
students to access learning resources.
Social
Respondents of the study admitted that mobile phone helps them keep in touch with
classmates and teacher. One respondent said that her use of mobile phone helps her
bond with friends in social media. It provides them an easy way of communication
through social media and messaging applications. Because of this easy flow of
communication, students are kept updated. The features that social media provide for
users allows free flow and convenient way of interaction for the respondents.
Stress
This is also related to the relief that the students get in using mobile phones. The results
shows that the entertainment they get from mobile phone usage eases their stress and
help them detach from the thought of their problems. Added to this, students are able to
lessen their stress by being open through communication their social media
applications. An article written by Mesfin A.B. (2020), suggest that mindful use of mobile
phone can positively affect one’s mental health.
Behavior
The responses gathered reflects negative effects of using mobile phone in their
behavior. A respondent said that her use of mobile phone makes her forget about her
responsibilities at home. Some respondents said that they feel lazy and distracted in
doing stuffs because of their mobile phones. In this case, it could appear negatively if
not use in a mindful way as Mesfin A.B. said. Jing T.S., et.al. (2023) concluded that
mobile phone addiction is related to lack of self-control and causes poor sleep quality. In
fact, the responses shows that students sleep late at night than their supposed time of
sleep when using mobile phone. Mobile phone entertainment catches the attention of
the users making them stick themselves in their phone for a longer time leading to
irresponsibility, laziness, and unhealthy lifestyle.
Chapter 5
Summary, Conclusion, Recommendation
Summary
The study describes the mobile phone usage of students of Carranglan National High
School. Through thematic analysis of the responses from 5 questions given to the
respondents, patterns are determined and helped to build themes according to
categories: Mobile phone use; and implications on students academic, behavior, social
aspect, and stress.
In light of the results gathered, the study found that (1) students primarily use their
phone for entertainment. Through watching in their phone, reading, playing, and
communicating students are able to reduce their stress. Social media platforms are the
means of communication of students, (2) this enables them to stay connected to their
peers and teachers and stay updated regarding what they should know. Moreover, (3)
students use their phone as a means of finding information online. These features aid
their learning journey conveniently. However, since their gadget take their time (4)
respondents tends to neglect their responsibilities and health. Without mindful usage,
the students may lead a healthy lifestyle.
Conclusion
Using the findings as a basis, the study concludes that:
1. Mobile phone usage positively influences students in their academic, stress
relief, and social interaction if they use it mindfully. It serves as their way of
convenient discovery both in academic and real-life situations
2. Students rely on their phone when feeling stress to lighten their feeling instead of
resorting to other methods such as going-out and conversing personally with
friends or family
3. Students’ usage of mobile phone semi-consciously affects their daily routine.
Recommendation
Noted the findings and conclusions derived from the responses. The study suggests
ideas that will further the advantage of mobile phone in academic settings and to avoid
its negative implications and helps in future researches.
a) For student users must use their mobile phone to efficiently catch up with their
academics
b) Utilize mobile phone usage as a convenient way of communication and building
relationship between teachers and students, and students to students
c) Utilize this study as a guideline for students in a purposeful usage of their mobile
phones
d) Further study should be taken to determine the mediators of phone usage and
negative behavior or routine
