Section I: Reading Comprehension

Part A: To read for main ideas, details, and reference

Question 1 32 / 32 pts

Read the following text and use the information to answer the
questions below.

A MODERN ANXIETY?

You know the feeling – you have left your phone at home and feel
anxious, as if you have lost your connection to the world.
“Nomophobia” (short for no-mobile phobia) affects teenagers and
adults alike. You can even do an online test to see if you have it.
Last week, researchers from Hong Kong warned that nomophobia is
infecting everyone. Their study found that people who use their
phones to store, share and access personal memories suffer most.
When users were asked to describe how they felt about their
phones, words such as “hurt’” (neck pain was often reported) and
“alone” predicted higher levels of nomophobia.

“The findings of our study suggest that users perceive smartphones

as their extended selves and get attached to the devices,” said Dr
Kim Ki Joon. “People experience feelings of anxiety and
unpleasantness when separated from their phones.” Meanwhile, an
American study shows that smartphone separation can lead to an
increase in heart rate and blood pressure.

So can being without your phone really give you separation anxiety?
Professor Mark Griffiths, chartered psychologist and director of the
International Gaming Research Unit at Nottingham Trent University,

says it is what is on the phone that counts – the social networking

that creates Fomo (fear of missing out).

“People don’t use their phones to talk to other people – we are

talking about an internet-connected device that allows people to deal
with lots of aspects of their lives,” says Griffiths. “You would have to
surgically remove a phone from a teenager because their whole life
is ingrained in this device.”

Griffiths thinks attachment theory, where we develop emotional

dependency on the phone because it holds details of our lives, is a
small part of nomophobia. For “screenagers”, it is Fomo that creates
the most separation anxiety. If they can’t see what’s happening on
Snapchat or Instagram, they become panic-stricken about not
knowing what’s going on socially. “But they adapt very quickly if you
take them on holiday and there’s no internet,” says Griffiths.

Deliberately separating from your phone by turning it off or leaving it

at home can reduce dependency and anxiety. Griffiths says the
criteria for phone addiction include it being the most important thing
in your life, building up the time you spend on it, withdrawal
symptoms, using it to de-stress or to get excited. Your phone-use
also needs to compromise relationships or work and provoke inner
conflict – you know you should cut down, but can’t. Few people,
Griffiths says, fulfill these criteria. But surely many of us experience
some of them.

smartphones in every aspect of daily life". Remember that your

Your Answer:

The effects of using smartphones in every aspect of

daily life
Cellphones and the internet are part of everyday life for most people
these days. Smartphones has changed our lifes since we started used.
While most people mainly use their cell phones in a meningful and
controlled way, some people lose control over how often and for
how long they surf the internet, are active on social networks, or
spend their time playing online games (video games). This can result in
quite considerable problems as the cell phone addiction.

The first main cause of cellphone addiction is the dopamine in the brain,
in which a hit of dopamine in the brain lets out feel-good chemicals into
your body. Therefore, research studies suggest that people have

alterations in the brain similar to those individuals with an addiction to

drugs and with the old compulsive gambling habit. A second important
cause of cell phone addiction is the communications problem in shy
people. Acoording to studies, people who are very shy or have
difficulty communicating with other people use the cell phone as a way
of scape. A third significant reason for cell phone addiction is the
dependency, where everything is close, and we always have our
phones at our fingertips making dependency, so, people spend a lot of
hours on their cell phones.

The causes above give rise to three significant effects, namely

belonging and attachment, loneliness, depression and social anxiety,
and eye damage.

One result of cell phone addiction is that these chemicals create a

sense of belonging and attachment. It has been observed that there are
changes in the area of the brain associated with attention, planning,
and prioritizing (pre-froontal area). These changes explain why people
with addictions put the use of the internet or consumption of drugs
before basic everyday things, like eating or sleeping. In other words,
people tune out their basic needs to be focused on their cell phones.

Another important consequence is increasing loneliness, depression,

and social anxiety. In fact, cell phone addiction can drive individuals to
become preoccupied with their phone and turn to it if they are
depressed, anxious, and lonely. This is especially true for indivuals with
pre-existing anxiety, who may equate their phones with a comfort
blanket. However, it could affects social skills because they spend a lot
of time using their phones and they forget they need to meet new
people.

A final effect of celll phone addiction is eye damage. In fact,

smartphones , laptops, and other handheld devices all transmit light.
However, the blue light in particular may be toxic for your eyes, so, this
unfocused visual noise reduces contrast and can contribute to digital
eye strain. Mobile phone eye strain may cause dry eye and irritation,
paintful throbbing headaches around the eye region, and even blurred
vision, but the damage is irreversible.

To conclude, cell phones play an important role in the development of

human civilization, although cell phones allow individuals to have
unlimited access to information and to connect with others in a way
otherwise thought impossible, there are many harmful and disturbing
effects of smartphones dependence. People should diminish the use of
this device and find a healthy distraction (sports, music, and others). To
reduce their harmful effects, one should always think back on a cell

phone should never be used too much. As a result, there are various
types of treatment for those with a cell phone addiction. This could be a
simple as making rules for yourself and downloading apps on your
phone to cut down usage. Or, for more severe cases, there are
diffferent therapy methods and treatment centers available.
