Determination of tensile strength of a polymer specimen
What is tensile • Tensile strength is a measurement of the
strength? force required to pull something to the point
where it breaks.
3
There are three typical definitions of tensile strength:

Yield strength: The stress a material can

withstand without permanent
deformation. Yield strength is the stress
which will cause permanent deformation
of 0.2% of the original dimension.

Ultimate strength: The maximum

stress a material can withstand.

Breaking strength: The stress

coordinates on the stress-strain
curve at the point of rupture.

4
Why do we measure tensile strength?

To determine
To determine the
consistency in the
batch quality
manufacture

To reduce material costs

To aid in the
and achieve lean
design process
manufacturing goals

To ensure compliance
with international and
industry standards

Methodology for tensile strength determination:

The thickness and width of the specimen were measured to the

nearest 0.025 mm at several points along the narrow sections.

The specimen was placed in the grips of the testing machine

taking care to align the long axis of the specimen.
The grips were tightened evenly and firmly to prevent slippage of the
specimen during the test but not too tightly so as to crush the specimen.

All the dimensions of the specimen were given as input to

the machine.
The machine was set at 25 mm/min speed and then the test was
initiated.

After completion of the test, the machine gave the tensile

strength in MPa.
