Compton effect :

When high frequency radiation are scattered by electrons of the scattered, the frequency of the scattered wave is
smaller than the frequency of incident radiation. This phenomenon is called Compton effect.
Arthur Compton in 1923 explained this effect by considering the particle name of electromagnetic wave.
The change in wavelength of high energy radiation always scattering process is called Compton shift and it is
given by
 Where,
 λ = wavelength of incident radiation
 λ` = Wavelength of scattered radiation
 m° = rest mass of electron
 θ = the angle at which radiation scattered
 c = velocity of light

Expression for the Compton - shift

Let us consider that a photon collides with an electron at rest.Let the energy of the photon before collision be hυ. So, it’s momentum before
collision is hυ/c, where C is the velocity of light. Let the energy of the scattered photon be hυ` and hence it’s momentum is hυ`/C.

Since the electron is at rest before the

Collision, its Energy is m°c^2 corresponding to

The rest mass m° and it’s momentum is zero

Let v be the velocity of the electron after

Collision so that it’s momentum is MV and energy

Is mc^2.

Suppose that after collision, the photon is scattered at an

Angle θ and the electron is deflected at an angle Φ as shown in fig: A.
