We all experience frustration whenever we
cannot say something about a concept during
class recitation or a few words to a friend
during his/her party about an event given the
little time to prepare and think. This is an
example of an impromptu speech.

from the other types of speech. When you
are called to deliver impromptu speech,
you have limited presentation time (two
m i n u te s o r e v e n l e s s i n s o m e i n s t a n c e s .
Infact, if you notice you always give
impromptu speechs.

Example: When you are tasked to recite


in class.
Here are some strategies to deliver the
speech effectively:

1. Use a virtual outline to structure your talk or


respond.
a. Past, Present, Future
b. Point- Reason- Example/ Explanation-Point
c. Opening, Rule if Three, Clincher
In some cases, you will encounter certain
problems like not being aware about the topic or
not being interested in the topic. Distinguished
Toastmaster Craig Harrison shared the following
strategies in frameworks that can help you
address the dilemma.
a. Bridging- This is building a connection between
what you don't know to what you do know.
b. Reframing. this is a reframing, rephrasing or
redefining a topic he way you like it to be. This
usually occurs if you think the topic is inappropriate
or it is not meant for you.
c. Play the Devil's Advocate- This refers to you
standing on the opposite side.
2. Keep your speech brief and to the point.
3. Do not apologize or say, "So sorry, I'm not really
good at giving impromptu speeches," or "I'm sorry
I don't know what to say. I have no idea." Avoid
saying something that will affect your credibility as
a speaker.
4. If you need time to process what to say, begin
by greeting your audience. Acknowledge their
presence and thank them for coming to the
presentation.
5. Read.Read a lot so you are always well-
informed of the happenings and knowledgeable
about any topic.
6. Create or recreate a story. In this sense use
your imagination and make up a story.
7. Speak slowly and clearly. Take a deep breath
and stay calm.

• Relax by thinking positive things.
• Identify your purpose.
• Choose an appropriate structure for your speech.
During the Speech
• When you are called, keep composed, walk slowly
to the lectern or center stage or microphone.
• When necessary, shake hand with the one who
introduced you. As you stand deliver, maintain eye
contact, and begin right away with your opening
statements.
• Part of your opening is greeting your audience, from
your initial idea to the next, use appropriate
transitional device.
After the Speech
• Say thank you.
• Return to your place comfortably.
IMPORTANCE

• Impromptu speaking is important because it helps


you develop your critical thinking, creativity and
communication skills. Moreover, impromptu
speaking can help you overcome your fear of public
speaking and boost your self-confidence.

• Impromptu Speaking is a valuable skill that can


be honed through practice and presentation. With
time, you'll become a confident and articulate
