Evolution and Adaptation Basics

Charles Darwin began to think that living organisms could change their structure over time to become better adapted to their environments, challenging the idea that species were fixed in their forms. Through his work, Darwin proposed that species evolve over generations through a process he called natural selection, where organisms better suited to their environments are more likely to survive and pass on their traits.

VARIATION AND

NATURAL SELECTION
18.3/3.24
OBJECTIVES
• What is adaptation
• Who is Charles Darwin
• Evolution of natural selection
What is adaptation?

• An organism that is well suited to

make the most of the limited
resources within its environment is
said to show adaptation
• Example of adaptation:

Cactus vs water lily

Xerophyte vs hydrophyte
The work of Charles Darwin (1809-82)
• Charles Darwin began to think that living organisms could change in
structure, meaning, they become adapted to meet the challenges of
their environment
• He thought that species were not fixed to their current form (as
placed on earth by God), and that they changed through time to
produce new species.
• This process of changing through time was called evolution
