ABOUT
AEOLIPILE

An aeolipile, also known as Hero's engine, is an

ancient steam-powered device invented by Heron
of Alexandria. It consists of a hollow sphere filled
with water and two nozzles. When heated, it expels
steam through the nozzles, causing the sphere to
rotate, demonstrating the basic principle of steam
power. While not used practically in its time, it laid
the foundation for later steam engine development
during the Industrial Revolution.
INSPIRATION/
OBJECTIVE
Generally, this device is usually made out of a sphere
with propellers fixed diametrically opposite at the
equatorial line of the sphere, and is driven by steam.

Now, we propose to build the engine out of a cylinder,

thereby having 25% more moment of inertia than
sphere. This shall reduce the manufacturing time, the
cost and the complexities associated with the
construction of spherical shells. Moreover, this shall
render a more stable system to propel through
nitrogen.

Additionally, we are propose the usage of a very

sturdy stand as represented by our CAD model to Note: This is the first ever attempt to make hero’s
further impart stability to the system . engine using a cylinder body in conjunction with
liquid nitrogen.

CALCULATION

A pdf explaining the detailed calculations for the project has been enclosed with the e-mail/ uploaded
to gdrive.

Following topics have been dealt with in the pdf:

1) Thickness calculation for the cylinder to withstand the pressure exerted by nitrogen when liquid
nitrogen expands to its gaseous form.
2) Formula for angular velocity has been derived for a symmetrical (about its axis) body with two
nozzles for the same experiment. It can subsequently be used to calculate the efficiency of the
engine.

As it is only in its proposal stage, we have not run through the entire calculations with values
involved, however, the same shall be showed hopefully in the seminar stage.

STAGE PROCESS DESCRIPTION

Cylindrical Rod Cutting Cylindrical Rod was cut into the required length of 110cm with the help
of metal cutting saw.

Cylindrical Workpiece Turning The diameter of the cylindrical workpiece was reduced till 100mm in
metalworking lathe.

Cylindrical Workpiece Drilling The workpiece was progressively drilled with drill bits of increasing
diameter (16 mm, 32 mm, 50mm) to create hollow cylinder.

Cylindrical Workpiece Boring The workpiece was further bored to the to the diameter of 76.4mm.

Metal lid Cutting Metal lids of same diameter as workpiece and 20mm length are cut with
the help of metal cutting saw.

Cylindrical Workpiece Drilling Cylindrical Rod

Thin Cylindrical Rod Turning To reduce diameter to 8 mm at either ends for fitting into the bearing

STAGE PROCESS DESCRIPTION

Steel Square Cut Out Cutting For fitting ball bearing

Steel Square Cut Out Drilling 19 mm hole drilled

Steel Square Cut Out Boring Of 22m upto the depth of 8 mm

Final Stand Welding The cylinder is mounted into the bearing on either side and then the stand
is welded
