INTRODUCTION
The need for revolutionizing Canadian transportation

• Revolutionising public transport

systems is key to decarbonise
countries, and the wider global
scale.

• Fortunately, a better path forward is

clear: limit resource consumption
with a shift to a circular economy
and provide a high-quality, low-
cost, electrified bus and rail network
to the benefit of both citizens and

Current state of public transit
in Canada
• Despite the many benefits of electric public
transit, the current state of public transit in
Canada still heavily relies on traditional fossil
fuel-powered vehicles.

• However, there is a growing interest and

investment in electric buses and trains, with
several cities piloting electric public transit
initiatives.

• By transitioning to electric public transit on a

larger scale, Canada can reduce its carbon
footprint and create a greener, more sustainable
transportation system for its residents in https://www.edinburghlive.co.uk/news/edinburgh-news/lothian-buses-edinburgh-

ELECTRIC BUSES
• Buses are commonly used mode of
transporation by public.

• So the adoption of electric buses by countries

work as a revolution in public transporation in
canada

• This is only done by with the efforts of

government as well as transporatation
agengies.

• The report by Clean Energy Canada says that

while Canada is a leading manufacturer of
electric buses, transit authorities are behind
international peers.(https://bc.ctvnews.ca/huge-potential-report- (https://bc.ctvnews.ca/huge-potential-report-calls-for-more-electric-buses-in-

TREND OF ELECTRIC BUSES IN CANADA
• An article stated that:

• Toronto, Ottawa, Regina and Saint John are all

reporting recent changes made in advancing
the electrification of their fleets, ranging from
new municipal zero-emission vehicle
commitments to high-volume procurement.

• The federal government is also pushing for the

greater adoption of zero-emission buses. As
part of the Zero Emission Transit Fund, the
government committed $2.75 billion over five
years to assist in buying at least 5,000 zero-
emission buses by 2025.

ELECTRIC TRAINS
• An electric train is a locomotive powered by
electricity from overhead lines

• Newer electric locomotives use AC motor-inverter

drive systems that provide for regenerative braking.

• Electric locomotives are quiet compared to diesel

locomotives since there is no engine and exhaust
noise and less mechanical noise

• An electric locomotive can be supplied with power

from : 1. Rechargeable energy storage systems, such
as a battery or ultracapacitor-powered mining
locomotives.
2. A stationary source, such as a third rail or overhead
wire.
ELECTRIC TAXI IN CANADA
• Taxi is also used as public transporation but
the trend electric taxi is not so popular.

• But now government of Quebec took an

action to run e-taxi on roads again by taking
some efforts

• On Dec. 2, E-Taxi, an electric taxi importer

based in Montreal, announced the arrival of
25 e6 model taxis from BYD,( the giant EV
manufacturer based in China, )and said that
they were now in the hands of taxi drivers
around town

Benefits of electric public transit
• Electric public transit offers a multitude of benefits for Canadians. These
eco-friendly vehicles significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions,
improving air quality and mitigating climate change.

• Additionally, electric public transit provides a quieter and more pleasant

commuting experience, enhancing the overall quality of life in urban areas.
With their reliability and ef ciency, electric buses and trains are paving the
way for a sustainable and futuristic transportation system.

.
Challenges in transitioning to electric public
transit
• Transitioning to electric public transit on a larger scale comes with several
challenges.

• These include the high upfront costs of purchasing and maintaining electric
vehicles, limited charging infrastructure, and the need for proper training and
infrastructure upgrades for maintenance and operations.

• However, with strategic planning, collaboration, and government support, these

challenges can be overcome, leading to a cleaner and more efficient transportation
system for Canadians.
Government initiatives and funding for electric
public transit
• The Government is providing funding for the continued expansion of the network of ZEV charging
and refuelling stations for public transit where Canadians live, work and play.
• Funding is available for EV charging in:
 workplaces
 Stations ( bus stop, railway station)
 public places
 on streets; and for
 commercial fleets

• In support of the Government's objective of adding 50,000 ZEV chargers to Canada's network,
Budget 2022 also provides an additional $400 million to transportation sector, Can for deploying zero
emission vehicle infrastructure, complemented by $500 million that Canada's Infrastructure Bank will
invest in large-scale ZEV charging.
Role of technology in advancing electric public

transit
Technology plays a crucial role in advancing
electric public transit. It enables the
development of more efficient electric buses
with longer battery life and faster charging
capabilities.

• Additionally, technology facilitates the

implementation of smart charging
infrastructure, allowing for optimized energy
management and integration with renewable
energy sources.

• Through continuous technological

advancements, electric public transit can
become more reliable, affordable, and
accessible for Canadians.
FUTURE PROJECT OF PUBLIC TRANSIT IN
CANADA
• Air Canada has placed a purchase order
for 30 hybrid-electric aircrafts from
Swedish manufacturer Heart Aerospace,
while also securing a US$5-million stake in
the company, giving the airline influence
over the future of zero-emission flying.

• Aerospace will be a step forward to our

goal of net zero emissions by 2050,” said
Michael Rousseau, president and chief
executive officer of Air Canada in a press
release.

• The planes are expected to take 30 to 50 https://electricautonomy.ca/2022/09/15/air-canada-hybrid-electric-passenger-airplanes/

minutes to charge.
Conclusion: The way forward for Canadian
transportation
• In conclusion, the future of Canadian transportation lies in embracing
electric public transit. The advancements in battery efficiency, faster
charging times, and autonomous driving technology offer promising
possibilities for convenient and sustainable transportation.

• By investing in and expanding electric transit systems, Canada can lead

the way in revolutionizing the way people travel, reducing emissions,
and creating a greener future for all.
