/a/ /u/
The diphthong /au/ is produced
when the back of the tongue moves
from a low-lax position /a/ to the
high lax arch for the /U/, the lips
move from an unround to closely
rounded position. All of this is done
in one syllable.
/aɪ/
/a/ /ɪ/
For the diphthong /aI/, the front of
the tongue starts from a low arch
with the lips unround and the jaws
apart for the /a/ then glides to the
position for the /I/.
/ɔɪ/
/ɔ/ /ɪ/
For the diphthong /ɔɪ/, the back of the
tongue starts from a midway position
with the lips rounded, jaw apart for
the /ɔ/, then glides to the position for
the /ɪ/ with the lips spread and the
distance between the jaws very little.
