Major Fishing Ground

Fishing ground

• "Fishing grounds" are areas in bodies of water, such as oceans, seas, lakes, or
rivers, where fishermen engage in fishing activities to catch fish and other
aquatic species. These areas are selected based on factors like the presence of
abundant marine life, favorable water conditions, and accessibility. Different
fishing methods and techniques may be employed depending on the type of
fish and the characteristics of the fishing grounds.
WORLD Major Fishing Regions

1. The Southeast Pacific Region

It Extends from the Pacific coast of South America including Panama to Cape Horn. The north-
flowing Peru Current provides an ideal environment for anchovy farming as it is associated with a
coastal upwelling of cooler, nutrient-rich waters laden with plankton on which the anchovies feed.
2. The Western Central Pacific Region
It ranges from the Philippines and southern Indonesia to the Australian coast. Redfish, sea bass,
mullet, mackerel, oyster, crab, and tuna are famous fish found in this region.
3. The North Eastern Pacific Region
It expanded from Alaska to California along the west coast of North America and is the fourth
largest fishing area in the world. Salmon, tuna, halibut, and sardines can be found on the surface of
this region. This region is famous for having the best cod fisheries in the world, along with herring
and haddock.
4. The North West Atlantic Region
The region stretches from the Grand Bank to the Georges Bank area of the Northwest Atlantic.
This region provides favorable conditions for breeding due to the convergence of the Gulf
Stream and Labrador Current which increases the productivity of the fishery. Fishes like cod,
halibut, tuna, squid, flounder, redfish, salmon, Herring, and mackerel are found here.

5. The North-West Pacific Region

It covers regions from the Bering Sea to the East China Sea, it is the largest and largest fishing
area in the world. Extends south from the Outer Aleutian Islands north to the Central Pacific
north of the Philippines. The region’s greatest asset is its fish, famous for salmon, king crab,
herring, halibut, Alaskan Pollock, and cod.
Four Sectors of Philippine Fisheries
1. Aquaculture Fisheries
Aquaculture is breeding, raising, and harvesting fish, shellfish, and aquatic plants. This is needed to feed an
ever growing human population so aquaculture helps us with our 'food security'. provide us with increased
amounts of healthy and nutritious food.
2. Municipal Fisheries
Municipal Fisheries- refers to fishing within municipal waters using fishing vessels of three (3) gross tons
or less, or fishing not requiring the use of fishing vessels. Municipal waters extend 15 km from the
coastline.
3. Commercial Fisheries
Commercial Fisheries- refers to fishing beyond the municipal waters using fishing vessels more than three
gross tons.
4. Capture fisheries
Refers to all kinds of harvesting of naturally occurring living resources in both marine and freshwater
environments.
• The Philippines is surrounded by various bodies of water, and several regions serve as major
fishing grounds supporting the country's fisheries industry. Some significant fishing grounds
in the Philippines include:

1. Luzon Strait
Located between Luzon and Taiwan, it is known for various pelagic species, including tuna
and mackerel.
2. Visayan Sea
Positioned between the Visayan Islands, it supports diverse fisheries for species like
mackerel, sardines, and groupers.
3. Sulu Sea
Surrounded by the Philippines, Malaysia, and Indonesia, it is known for tuna and other
pelagic species.
4. Mindanao Sea
Surrounding the island of Mindanao, it is a significant fishing ground for various species,
including tuna, sardines, and anchovies.
5. Palawan Water
The waters around Palawan Island support fisheries for species like groupers, snappers, and
other reef-associated fish.

6. Celebes Sea
Positioned between the Philippines, Indonesia, and Malaysia, this sea is important for tuna and
other pelagic species.

7. Davao Gulf
Along the southern coast of Mindanao, it is known for fisheries targeting tuna, milkfish, and
shrimp.

8. Philippine Rise (Benham Rise)

Off the eastern coast of Luzon, it is an emerging fishing ground known for its rich biodiversity,
including tuna and other deep-sea species.

Importance of Aquatic resources
• Aquatic resources, including oceans, rivers,
and lakes, play a crucial role in sustaining life
and the environment. They provide a habitat
for diverse ecosystems, contribute to global
biodiversity, and support numerous species.
Additionally, aquatic resources are essential
for human survival, offering food, water, and
transportation. They also play a vital role in
regulating the Earth's climate by influencing
weather patterns and absorbing carbon
dioxide. Sustainable management of aquatic
resources is critical to maintaining ecological
balance and ensuring the well-being of both
ecosystems and human communities.
• Philippine seas supply food for the whole country and livelihood for millions
of people. Fisheries are economically, culturally, socially and ecologically
important to all Filipinos. These resources are in crisis as evidenced by the
declining fish catch, size and species composition around the country.
• The current condition of fisheries in the Philippines and worldwide is bleak.
Overfishing, illegal fishing and habitat destruction combined with increased
demand for fish and population growth continue to drive fisheries production
into a deeper abyss.
