PHONOTACTICS: They are constrained on the sequence or position of phonemes. They are definite
patterns in the type of sound combinations permitted in the language. This method would allowed us to create
new words in a language.
Syllables and Clusters: A syllable must contain a vowel (or vowel-like) sound. CV. The basic elements of
the syllable are the onset (one or more consonants) and the rhyme. (a vowel, which is treated as the
nucleus, plus any following consonant(s), described as the coda). Syllables like me, to or no have an onset
and a nucleus, but no coda. They are known as ‘open’ syllables. When a coda is present, as in the syllables
up, cup, at or hat, they are called ‘closed’ syllables. The basic structure of the kind of syllable found in
English words like green (CCVC).
Both the onset and the coda can consist of more than one consonant, also known as a consonant cluster. The
combination /st/ is a consonant cluster (CC) used as onset in the word stop, and as coda in the word post.
There are many CC onset combinations permitted in English phonotactics, as in black, bread, trick, twin,
flat and throw.

WORD FORMATION
ETYMOLOGY: The study of the origin and history of a word is known as its etymology, a term which, like
many of our technical words, comes us through Latin, but has its origin in Greek. When we look closely at the
etymologies of less technical words, we soon discover that there are many different ways in which new words can
enter the language.
WORD-FORMATION PROCESSES
• COINAGE: It is the invention of totally new terms. The most typical examples of coinage are the names of
Commercial products. For example, the words: aspirin, nylon, zipper, etc.
• BORROWING: This process consists of the taking over of words from other languages. For example, the
words: croissant (French); piano (Italian); sofa (Arabic), etc.
• LOAN TRANSLATIONS OR CALQUE: In this case there is a direct translation of the elements of a
word into the borrowing language. For example, the words: perros calientes which is a Spanish term to refer
to a type of junk food. This term was borrowed by the Spanish from the English (dogs hot or hot dogs).
Another example is the world is boyfriend which was taken from the Chinese (boyifuerendo).
• COMPOUNDING: It is the joining of two separate words to produce a single form. As for example, the
words: greenhouse (n), dark-skinned (adj), breath-take (v).
A compound word is a combination of two or more words that functions as a single unit of meaning. There are
three types of compound words:
• CLOSED COMPOUND WORDS: These are all ones that look like one word. There are usually made up
of only two words. For example, the words: notebook and bookshelf.
• HYPHENATED COMPOUNDS WORD: These are words that are joined together by a hyphen. For
example, the words: mother-in-law and factory-made.
• OPEN COMPUOND WORDS: These are those words that are formed by the modifying adjective and its
noun. We just use a space between the adjective and the noun so it is difficult to differentiate between an
attributive adjective plus its modified noun and a compound word. For example full moon and North
America.
• BLENDING: It is the combination of two separate words to produce a new word. It consists of taking only
the beginning of the first word and the last part of the second one. For example: internet (INTERnational
NETwork). One common example is the term used to refer to mixed language as SPANGLISH and
FRANGLAIS.
• CLIPPING: In this process, a word of more than one syllable is reduced to a shorter one. For example: doc
(doctor) and vet (veterinarian).
• BACKFORMATION: In this process, a word of one type (usually a noun) is reduced to form a word of
another type (usually a verb) A good example is the process whereby the word television is turn into the verb
televise.
• BACKFORMATION: In this process, a word of one type (usually a noun) is reduced to form a word of

• CONVERSION: In this process, there`s a change in the function of a word without any reduction. The
common example is when the noun butter is used as a verb.
• ACRONYMS: They are new words form from the initial letters of a set of other words. For example: VIP,
MPs, CD, PIN, etc.

• HYPOCORISM: It is a particular type of reduction in which a longer word is reduced into a single
syllable and ‘-y’ or ‘-ie’ is added to the word. For example: comfy.
For example: Put butter in your toast! = Butter your toast!
• EPONYMS: Among the coinage word-formation process, eponym is found as a way to form new
terms for commercial products based on the name of its inventor or the place in which it was
invented. For example, the words: Hovering Machine which inventor was Mr. Hover; jeans which
was invented in an Italian city called Genoa; watt from his inventor James Watt.
• MULTIPLE PROCESSES: It is possible to trace the operation of more than one process at work in
the creation of a particular word. For example, snowballed (COMPOUNDING + CONVERSION).
• ANALOGY: New words are formed to be similar in some ways to existing words. For example
yuppie (ACRONYM: youth international party).
• INITIALISM: In this process, the word is made from the first letter of each word in a phrase.
Unlikely acronyms, Initialism cannot be spoken as a word; they are spoken letter by letter. For
example: DVD (Digital Versatile Disc) and ATM (Automatic Teller Machine).
MORPHOLOGY
• lexical morphemes: ordinary nouns, adjectives and verbs that we think of as the words that carry
the “content” of the messages we convey; “open” class of words.
• functional morphemes: functional words in the language such as conjunctions, prepositions,
articles and pronouns.
• derivational morphemes: bound morphemes to make new words or to make words of a different
grammatical category from the stem; includes suffixes such as the -ish -ly -ment and prefixes such as re-,
pre-, ex-, mis-, co-, un
• inflectional morphemes: indicate aspects of the grammatical function of a word (plural or singular, past
tense, comparative or possessive form)

GRAMMAR
TRADITIONAL GRAMMAR has its origins in the description of languages such as Latin and Greek. The best-
known terms from that tradition are those used in describing the parts of speech.
• PARTS OF SPEECH:
• Nouns are words used to refer to people (boy), objects (backpack), creatures (dog), places (school),
qualities (roughness), phenomena (earthquake) and abstract ideas (love) as if they were all “things.”
• Articles are words (a, an, the) used with nouns to form noun phrases classifying those “things” (You can
have a banana or an apple) or identifying them as already known (I’ll take the apple).
• Adjectives are words used, typically with nouns, to provide more information about the things referred to
(happy people, large objects, a strange experience).
• Verbs are words used to refer to various kinds of actions (go, talk) and states (be, have) involving people
and things in events (Jessica is ill and has a sore throat so she can’t talk or go anywhere).
• Adverbs are words used, typically with verbs, to provide more information about actions, states and
events (slowly, yesterday).Someadverbs (really, very) are also used with adjectives to modify information
about things (Really large objects move slowly. I had a very strange experience yesterday).
• Prepositions are words (at, in, on, near, with, without) used with nouns in phrases providing information
about time (at five o’clock, in the morning), place (on the table, near the window) and other connections
(with a knife, without a thought) involving actions and things.
• Pronouns are words (she, herself, they, it, you) used in place of noun phrases, typically referring to
people and things already known (She talks to herself. They said it belonged to you).
• Conjunctions are words (and, but, because, when) used to make connections and indicate relationships
between events (Chantel’s husband was so sweet and he helped her a lot because she couldn’t do much
when she was pregnant).
