VDI CLONES
Full Clone Linked Clone
• Definition • Definition
• Fully independent copy of VM • VM that shares virtual disks with the parent VM
• No files or applications are shared with the parent VM during operation
after creation • Saves disk space
• Benefits • Allows multiple VMs to use the same software
• No continuous connection necessary to parent VM installation
• Best performance • Needs continuous access to the parent VM
• Benefits
• Rapid creation
• Easy to share

SINGLE REPLICA DATASTORES - CUSTOMER BENEFITS
• Ephemeral workloads
• Customer does not require HA of storage (ephemeral – create as needed i.e. containers or
floating VDI desktop)
• If VM is lost, there is no need for backup
• Once workload is completed – delete VM
• Persistent storage is not embedded inside the workload
• Efficiently accommodate application that is capable of providing protections
of their own
• Microsoft Exchange – Database Availability Group (DAG)
• Microsoft SQL – Always On Availability Group (AG)
• Backups must be application aware

REDUCED SIMPLIVITY DEPLOYMENT SIZE
• New optional deployment method with 4.0.1 significantly reduces the
Deployment Installer (DI) Image size
• SimpliVity 4.0.0 size: ~9GB
– Includes both VMware and Hyper-V hypervisors
• SimpliVity 4.0.1 size: ~800MB
– Manually copy only hypervisor required and OVC files to Windows user’s download directory
(usually C:/Users/username/Downloads)
• Would need DI if node is locked and needs factory reset
• Important for users who deploy SimpliVity through iLO virtual appliance
in ROBO environment
• Smaller files size means faster load times over network
• Eliminates need for user to be physically present at remote site to plug in

EXPANDING THE SCALE AND IMPROVING THE MANAGEABILITY
The motivation for Centrally Managed Federations
What is the best way to manage a very large scale SimpliVity Hyperconverged Infrastructure?
Centrally Managed Federation visions:
1. Increase scale to meet the Hypervisor Manager’s maximum scale.
2. Optimize communication within a federation across network topologies and geographic locations.
3. Optimize the efficiency of management and monitoring of participating nodes within a centrally managed
federation.

MANAGEMENT VIRTUAL APPLIANCE – DEPLOY
• New GUI option on HPE SimpliVity home page in 4.0.1 that provides ability to convert
peer-managed to centrally-managed HPE SimpliVity federations
• Customer benefit easy ability to deploy MVA
• Multi-step wizard supports single vCenter and linked-mode vCenters

RULES FOR UPGRADING AND DEPLOYING SIMPLIVITY CLUSTERS
• Upgrade
• Need every cluster in the federation to run SimpliVity 3.7.9 or newer software to support
mixed clusters within a federation
• Users can upgrade and commit individual clusters to higher SimpliVity software revisions
• Deploy
• Need every cluster in the federation to run SimpliVity 3.7.9 or newer software to support
mixed clusters within a federation
• Before deploying a cluster with a new software revision, there already must be at least
one cluster in the federation running the identical revision of software as the new cluster
• For additional rules, please reference the HPE SimpliVity 4.0.1
