Parler Monde/Talk to • Why learn French?
the world
Our goal(s)!

• This is (more or less) your first experience in

French in a classroom.
• We’re starting from scratch. We’ll use mostly
English and then slowly but surely « un peu plus
de Français ».
• This class is aimed at giving you the « basic »
tools to communicate in French. It’s a first step.
• It can bring you not only « academic
requirements » but also « internationnaly
acknowledged diplomas » with DELF or help with
your immigration project to Canada (if you have
one).
Our goal(s) [part
II]
1. Interact in a basic way with a Francophone speaker,
ask and reply to basic questions or information.
2. Understand sentences and frequently use
expressions, vocabulary related to the most
encountered situations in the daily life.
3. Introduce themselves to another Francophone
speaker.
4. Understand basic information taken from audio and
written materials.
5. Take the A1/A2 level DELF tests at the end of this
year-long class, if they wish to do so. These
standardized tests are recognized across the globe
and give an evaluation of your first steps in learning
French. They’re also helpful to prepare and get
ready for “French language test” within Canada
(TEF, TCF, TCFQ…).
• To learn more about the DELF:

Inspire
• In class we’ll use this method.
• There’s a text book, a « Cahier
d’activités » and an online
component.
• We’ll explore all of these next week.
• It’s available at Western bookstore.
• Details (ISBN) are in the syllabus (on
owl).
Test, quiz,
evaluations..
• Quizzes (4X5% and 1x10%): There will be 4 approximately 20 minute in-
class quizzes and 1 30 minute quiz. These quizzes will cover material
studied in class. Quizzes will consist mostly of multiple-choice questions
and will not be cumulative QUIZ 1 will only cover Unit 1 and 2, QUIZ 2 will
only cover Unit 3 and 4 etc. These are short quizzes, not tests, but please
prepare well as this will ensure proper progress. The last one will also
serve as a general review for the December exam. Dates : October 2d,
October 19th, November 9th, November 23d and December 5th.

• UNIT TEST (2X15%): The chapter test will be based on the most recent
materials covered in class. Each test will be preceded by a review in
class. Chapter tests are cumulative in the sense of you would have to
mobilize earlier knowledges. Dates: Test 1 (October 5th), Test 2
(November 16th).

• LISTENING AND COMPREHENSION (15%): At the end of term, each

student will have a “listening and comprehension” session with the
instructor. After introducing themselves briefly, students will pick a subject,
listen to a recording and engage in an interaction with the instructor.
Duration: 15 minutes (10 minutes prep time).

• Final Test (25%): The final exam will be based on the Units covered in
class. It will last 2 hours. The last quiz will be a review of this final
December test. (Date TBD during December Exam session).

• Fall term = 50% of your final year grade.
