Nowadays environment friendly farming getting popular and scientists still working to improve these kind of agricultural techniques. Ecological agriculture is the most prominent technique now. The main aim of ecological agriculture is ensuring healthy farming and healthy food for today and tomorrow, by protecting soil, water and climate, promotes biodiversity, and does not contaminate the environment with chemical inputs or genetic engineering. Because of global warming and the increasing human population, farming areas could decrease dramaticly and it could trigger a global food crisis in near future.
In order to provide the nutritional needs,
receiving more products from per unit area could become necessary. In order to harvest more product from smaller areas, there are some agricultural techniques. Enviromantal friendly some are; Hydroponics, Aeroponics and Aquaponics systems. These productions systems based on soilless agriculture. How we use water in this systems is highly important. Hydroponics is the method of growing plants without soil, using mineral nutrient solutions in a water solvent. Terrestrial plants may be grown with only their roots exposed to the mineral solution, or the roots may be supported by an inert medium, such as gravel, peat, vermiculite, perlite, coconut and rock wool or expanded clay aggregate. Aeroponics is the method of growing plants in an air or mist environment without the use of soil or an aggregate medium. The basic principle of aeroponic growing is to grow plants suspended in a closed or semi-closed environment by spraying the plant's dangling roots and lower stem with an atomized or sprayed, nutrient-rich water solution. Aquaponics is an integrated system that combines recirculating aquaculture and hydroponics.
Aquaponics consists of two main parts, with
the aquaculture part for raising aquatic animals and the hydroponics part for growing plants.
In this cyclical system, water, space and
energy are saved and product efficiency is at a higher level. In aquaponics, the nutrient-rich water from fish tanks provides fertilizer for the plants and the plants help to purify the water as a biofilter .
Various fresh water fishes can be used in this
system.
Aquaponics are much more advantages to other
systems. In Hydroponics and Aeroponics we need to use some salts, rare elements and expensive chemicals for plant growth. But in Aquaponics cheap fish-feed is enough.
Also fish do not carry the pathogens, such as e-
coli and salmonella , which warm blooded animals do. In this system water saved by recirculating and it is possible to saving from land with using verti̇ cal farming applications. Also adapting aquaponics with solar panels, it is possible to save from energy. The number of products that can be grown with aquaponics system is quite a lot.
These include curly salad, mint, basil, onion,
tomato, pepper, cucumber, beans, peas, and carrots as plants.
Tilapia, Trout, Carp, Catfish, Largemouth Bass
are examples for fishes to eat and there is also Goldfish and Koi as ornamental fishes. Experts emphasize that both hydroponics and aquaponics systems grow 10 times more products than conventional cultivation on the same footprint.
The harvest time is also 30% faster.
In multi-layer systems, efficiency is 9 times
higher than for non-multi-level hydroponic and aquaponic systems. Conclusion: - Natural resources are limited and the necessity of using one source for multiple purposes is inevitable. - It is important for the mankind’s future that devoloping multi culturing systems. - Combining aquaculture and agriculture is an efficient way. - Goverments should support and encourage combined systems like aquaponics. g ! i n t e n l is o r s f n k h a T In las Son yıllarda gelişmiş ülkeler başta olmak üzere dikkat çekici bir uygulama da Dikey Çiftlikler’dir.
