Agriculture
Awesome
words
In Bangladesh, brinjal crops were once devastated
by pests, leading farmers to use chemical pesticides.
Unfortunately, these pesticides adversely affected
the farmers’ health and were also costly. In 2013,
genetic modification provided a solution by
introducing Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis) into brinjals.
This naturally occurring bacterium targets insect
pests by destroying their digestive systems, resulting
in their death. Thanks to this innovation, pesticide
use was reduced by 80%.
Scientists are working on genetically modifying
fruits to enhance their antioxidant levels, which can
combat diseases, and enriching rice with additional
vitamins. Research is also underway to engineer
plants that are adaptable to climate changes, making
them resilient to droughts and floods. Genetic
modification aims to protect agriculture by enabling
plants to absorb nitrogen from the atmosphere like
microbes. Since nitrogen is essential for plant
growth, this innovation could reduce soil pollution
and the harmful effects of excessive nitrogenous
fertilizer use, thus mitigating environmental impact.
