Introduction
GENERAL
Safety Representatives play a key role in
improving health and safety in the workplace by
ensuring that Occupational Health and Safety
(OHS) issues concerning employees they
represent, are communicated to the appropriate
person for resolution.

Introduction
THE ROLE OF THE SAFETY REPRESENTATIVE
Safety Representatives are valuable partners between
employers and employees in addressing important health
and safety issues affecting employees.
Safety Representatives must have a good knowledge of
the work task and worksite
Safety Representatives have a key role in the prevention
of risks to employee’s health and safety and promoting
good OHS practice.
Safety Representatives must be adequately trained,
supported and encouraged if they are to be effective in
their role.

SELCTION OF HEALTH & SAFETY
REPRESENTATIVES
Any employee of the work place who does not
exercise managerial functions can be selected.
Usually, the Gang Leaders are pre-selected and
appointed by the Project Manager/Director.

Duties & Rights
Duties and Rights of the Safety Representatives:
• represent employees in discussions with the employer
on health, safety or welfare issues and in discussions
with the HSE department
• inspecting the workplace
• requesting an investigation with regards to hazards and
dangerous occurrences
• accompanying an investigator during an investigation
• investigating complaints by employees
• accompanying employees at certain interviews
• examining records relating to employees

Duties & Rights
Duties and Rights of the Safety Representatives:
• accessing OHS information relating to employees
• issuing provisional improvement notices
• consulting, communicating, promoting and monitoring
OHS activities with employees
• attend HSE committees and HSE meetings
• spend time on carrying out their functions and to
undergo training
• participate on Incident & Accident Investigations
• follow all relevant HSE Procedures and documentation
(Permit To Work, Lift Plans, etc.)

Safety Representative Meeting
Safety Rep’s will meet on a pre-determined scheduled
basis, with the HSE Manager and HSE Officers in order to
discuss all health, safety, environmental or welfare issues
raised by the employees. The raised issues will be
recorded in the minutes of meeting and added to the
ATAR (Action Tracking And Recording).
The HSE Department is
following up on the
issues and will assure
the close out of all raised
action items.
