1) In 1970, a foreign woman in Japan asked a KFC manager for chicken for her friends on Christmas, even though Christmas was not widely celebrated in Japan at the time.
2) The KFC manager had the idea to sell chicken to Japanese people for Christmas by claiming that Americans eat KFC on Christmas.
3) This lie was successful, and people went to KFC and waited to get the "traditional" Christmas food, starting the tradition of KFC being a Christmas food in Japan that continues today.

New restaurants, stores, and ideas were coming to Japan from other countries, including America. In 1970, Japanese people did not celebrate Christmas. However, many foreigners in Japan did. They missed Christmas back home. Mr.Okawara, the manager, gave her the first Christmas Chicken Bucket. Mr.Okawara was smart and had an idea.
One day in Nagoya, a
foreign woman went to Kentucky Fried Chicken and asked for chicken for her friends on Christmas. Okawara decided to sell Chicken to Japanese people too. KFC started saying "Kurisumasu ni wa kentakkii".
Okawara also said that in
America, everyone eats Kentucky Fried Chicken on Christmas. The lie worked. People went to KFC and waited a long time to get the "traditional" Christmas food.
This was a lie. Americans
do not eat KFC on Christmas. 51 years later we still celebrate Christmas in Japan with Kentucky Fried Chicken.
