Statement Of Problem :

EVALUATE EFFECTIVENESS OF OPTHALMIC NON

PHRAMACOLOGICAL INTERVENTION ON VISUAL
DISCOMFORT AMONG PROFESSIONAL COMPUTER
WORKERS IN SELECTED INSTITUTION AT KARUR
Introduction :

“Vision is the art of seeing what is invisible to others ” - Jonathan swift

• Vision is a complex perceptual process that is often mistakenly believed to be purely mechanical.
Vision is our most precious sense.
• Computer is one of the most fascinating inventions of the 20th century.
• Vision disturbance is a silent enemy that only appears after long period of continued stress in the
world, it has been nearly 60 million people experience vision problem. Vision discomfort is common in
majority of people who continuous use of laptops, mobile internet and other technology gadgets that
strain the eye. In India 75 percent of young software professionals and IT students reported to self
related vision discomfort.
Need For The Study :

• Computer vision syndrome is a complex eye discomfort condition in the form of visual impairment
symptoms caused by prolonged exposure to digital displays, a combination of visual problems, poor
computer work station and improper computer use habits.

• Most of the studies indicate the visual symptoms occur in 75-90% of computer workers at worldwide.

According to WHO ,

• Globally at least 2.2 billion people have a vision impairment or blindness, of whom at least one billion have
a vision impairment. It is estimated that globally only 36% of people with a distance vision impairment due
to refractive error and only 17% people with vision impairment access to cataract have received access to
an appropriate intervention.

• It is reasonable to believe that as our society is dependence on computer, online services and the access of
internet is increase. So the occurrence of computer vision syndrome is frequent and severe.

• The good news is that the eye and vision symptoms and problems of computer vision syndrome can
usually be alleviated by good eye care and eye exercise.
Objectives :

• Assess the pre intervention level of visual discomfort among professional computer workers in experimental
and control group.

• Evaluate the effectiveness of ophthalmic non pharmacological intervention among professional computer
workers in experimental and control group.

• Compare the pre and post intervention level of visual discomfort among professional computer workers in
experimental and control group.

• Find out the association between the pre intervention level of visual discomfort of professional computer
workers with their selected background factors in experimental and control group.
Hypothesis:

Hypothesis – 1 :

• There will be significant difference between pre intervention and post intervention level of visual discomfort
among professional computer workers in experimental group.

Hypothesis – 2 :

• There will be significant difference between post intervention level of visual discomfort among professional
computer workers in experimental and control group.

Hypothesis – 3 :

• There will be significant association between the pre intervention level of visual discomfort with selected
background factors among professional computer workers in experimental and control group.
Operational Definition :

Effectiveness :
• Effectiveness means the outcome or results or change produced from an action which is taken by the
researcher among professional computer workers.

Visual Discomfort :
• It refers to asthenia or visual discomfort in which presence of eye strain, blurred vision, itching of eyes,
heaviness of eye, dryness of eye, headache. It is measured by a visual discomfort semi structured
questionnaire and Snellen chart.

Ophthalmic Non Pharmacological Intervention :

• It refers to the intervention are given to reduce the symptoms of visual discomfort which includes sunning,
washing the eyes, palming the eyes, cold pack, slow blinking, squeeze blinking, game of the ball, rotate the
eye ball, gaze at eight direction, 20 20 20 rule.

Computer Workers:
• The individual those are working with computers in selected institution, computer centers, colleges at Karur.
Assumption:

Assumption :
• The computer workers may co operates.
• The ophthalmic non pharmacological intervention may improve the visual discomfort.
• The computer workers may actively participate.

Delimitation :
• Study limited to the computer workers among 60 members.

Research Approach :
• Evaluative approach

Research Design:
• Quasi experimental research design.
• Pre test post test control group design.
Methodology:

Study Settings:
• The study will be conducted in professional computer workers those who are working at
computer centers, school, and colleges at karur.

Sample:
• The samples are the computer workers those who are working in computer centers, school,
colleges and fulfill the inclusion criteria.

Sampling Techniques:
• Purposive sampling technique.

Sample Size:
• 30-experimental group.
• 30- control group.
Sampling Criteria :

Inclusion Criteria:
• Those who are working in computer for at least 6 hours per day for 2 to 3 years.
• Computer workers who are willing to participate.
• Both male and female computer workers.
• Those who are present at the time of data collection.

Exclusion Criteria:
• Computer workers with other vision problems or disease condition like cataract,
conjunctivitis.
 Those who are already practicing eye exercises
 Who are absent during the data collection
variables :

Independent variable:
• Ophthalmic exercise

Dependent variable:
• Computer workers with visual discomfort complaints.
Demographic variable:
• Demographic Variable Consists of age in years. Sex, educational status, marital status
working hours in computers per day, years of experiece
Pilot study :

• A pilot study will be on 6 computer professional workers after obtaining permission letter from
the authorities. The samples will be chosen by the purposive sampling technique. A pre test
fallowed by a ophthalmic non pharmacological intervention of it for 7 consecutive days. Analysis
if the data will be done and the results revealed that the study will be feasible to conduct.
Data collection procedure :

• Pre test will be conducted on the first day to assess the symptoms if visual discomfort among
professional computer workers followed by demonstration of non pharmacological intervention
by the researcher.
• Post test was conducted in 15th day by using the semi structured questionnaire.
Plan for data analysis :

• The data will be analyzed with the help of descriptive statistics like mean ,percentage, standard
deviation and inferential statistics like “t” test and chi-square.
• The association between the demographic variables were analyzed with the help of chi-square
test.
