 Health and Safety With the Pillar Drill

•Wear Safety Goggles/Eye Protection.

• Make sure to tie back long hair

• Tuck in lose clothing.

• Know where the on/off switch and emergency buttons

are.

• Make sure piece is secured in the clamp before drilling.

• Make sure drill bit is securely tightened in the drill.

• Only one person at the machine at a time.

 Applying Oil/Varnish
•When using varnish, we make sure that the room
is well ventilated as the fumes can cause
headaches and dizziness.

• Make sure your piece is free from pencil marks

and is cleaned of dust before beginning
varnishing.

• Dip the brush into the can and apply small

amounts of varnish at a single time. Before
finishing up go over the piece again with a brush
to remove any excess varnish. Wash brushes in
sink and leave in allocated tub.

• We then leave the pieces to dry on the allocated

bench.

• Wash hands to remove any varnish

 Finding the Centre Point

On the backing piece create two diagonal

lines going from each corner as shown in the
picture to the right.

We then use the pillar drill to make an 8.5mm

hole through the centre point for the clock
mechanism to fit into.

 TIDY UP ROUTINE

•Sweep down benches and sweep around

the room.

•Tidy up tools and working areas.

•Leave chairs neatly under bench

•Leave the room in an orderly fashion.
