Elements of a Staircase

Handrail: The rail that you hold on to when going up or


down the stairs. Runs parallel to the string

Newel Post:The post that the string is joined to. These


support the handrail at the top and bottom of the stairs.

String: Long diagonal members of the stairs that support


the steps.

Baluster: Vertical member that is placed between the


string and the handrail.

Tread: The part of the stairs on which you tread on.


Tread depth is the measurement from the front edge of
the step to the riser. The width is the measurement
from side to side.

Riser: The vertical component at the back of each tread.
