Constant flow operation

• Constant flow operation (also called constant rate

operation) is a condition of filtration in which the
filtrate volume perunit time is kept constant this
happens due to a formation of thick layer over the
filter media the filtrate volume per unit time will
decrease so of we want to keep Same constant flow
of filtration (that is volume collected per unit time)
we have to increase the pressure drop across the
filter media as well as across the filter cake.
• In order for constant flow operation to work the
driving force that is the pressure difference have to
increase through out the filtration process to
maintain constant volume flow or rate.
• The change in P refers to the total pressure drop
over the filter cake and over the filter medium. In
order for constant flow operation to work we have
to increase the pressure drop in the filter cake also
the pressure drop in the filter medium to increase
the overall pressure drop to achieve constant flow
or constant rate.
• The working equation for constant flow operation is
