Division is splitting into equal parts or groups.

Symbols

We use the ÷ symbol, or sometimes the / symbol to divide:


12 ÷ 3 = 4
12 / 3 = 4
=4
Names

In a division, each number has a distinctive name:

dividend ÷ divisor = quotient

Dividend means a number to be divided by another number.


Divisor means the one who divides or separates.
Quotient means the answer of division.

Example: 12 ÷ 3 = 4:
12 is the dividend
3 is the divisor
4 is the quotient
