The Present Continuous


Formula

To form the Present Continuous tense, you need to use the present tense of the verb "to be" (am, is, are)
and add the present participle of the main verb. The present participle is formed by adding "-ing" to the
base form of the verb.
We use the present continuous to
talk about:

Time Expressions(activities at the moment of speaking):

● Please be quiet. The children are sleeping.

● I am preparing the presentation for the client meeting on


Friday.

● She’s pressing the button but nothing is happening.


We use the present continuous to
talk about:

Time Expressions(activities that are temporary):

● My sister is doing a driving course.

● We are looking for a new flat.

● Jim is working on an important project.


We use the present continuous to
talk about:

Future Plans or arrangements:

● Mary is going to a new school next term.

● We are meeting with the client next week to present our


proposal.

● We’re moving to Cambridge in July.


We use the present continuous to
talk about:
Temporary states:

● Her mother’s living with her at the moment. She’s just


come out of hospital.

● Who’s looking after the children while you’re here?

● The weather is getting warmer.


We use the present continuous to
talk about:
Emphasizing Irritation or Annoyance:

● Why are you always interrupting me?

● She's making the same spelling mistake again.

● My neighbours are always arguing so loud at night.


Some common signal words with
present continuous:

● “now”,
● “at the moment”,
● “this week”
● “for the time being”
