GRAMMAR: Present Continuous Tense

The present continuous tense is formed from the present tense of the verb be and the -ing
form of a verb. It describes activities happening now.

· I am learning English now.

· We are sitting in the class.

· You are listening to the lecturer.

To make negative sentence, add NOT after to be:

· I am not learning English now. I am reading Math.

· We are not sitting in the class.

· You aren’t listening to the lecturer.

To make question/interrogative

· Are you listening to the lecturer?

· What are you listening?

What’s the difference between these sentences?

· He speaks Spanish.

· He is speaking Spanish.

When we use present continuous?

We use the present continuous tense to talk about the present:

1. For something happening at the moment of speaking

I’m just finishing work. I’ll be home in an hour.


Please be quite. The students are doing test.

2. For something which is happening before and after a given time

At seven o’clock we are usually leaving home for school.

When I get home my father is watching the news.

3. For something we think is temporary

Maria is in the shop. She’s buying vegetables.

I’m working in Surabaya for the next two month.

4. For something which is new and contrasts with a previous state

These days most people are using email instead of writing letters.

What sort of music are teenager listening to nowadays?

George is great. He’s always winning.

Note: we normally use always with this use

We use the present continuous tense to talk about the future.

For something which has been arranged or planned:

I am going to Bali for the next holyday.

What are you doing next week?

We can use the present continuous to talk about the past.

When we are telling a story

When we are summarizing the story from a book, film or play, etc.
