CRO Basics - Rotary Vane Compressor

Component : Lubrication

 Can be driven directly off

Compressor main drive shaft
or use independent system
 Oil along length of rotor
casing
 Also lubricates rotor shaft
bearings
 Drips remain with
compressed air & must be
removed using additional
separation

CRO Basics - Rotary Vane Compressor

Principle of Operation
 Numerous crescent shaped cells trap the air being
compressed
 Vanes pressed into casing by centrifugal force
 Reducing individual compression pockets -> Compression
 Compressed air exits outlet port

13 February 2009
CRO Basics - Rotary Vane Compressor

Principle of Operation : Cooling system

 Continuous circulation of water through enclosed jacket

 Water supplied at bottom of Compressor exits out the top

 Ensures efficient heat transfer takes place as the water

jacket is maintained full at all times

Safety – Risk assessment exercise

 As a field patroller, you have to:

• Perform 1st level running inspections on the Rotary vane
compressor
• Do some troubleshooting interventions on the Rotary vane
compressor

 By workgroups, do the risk assessment for your

interventions on this equipment
• Use the template
• 15 minutes by workgroups
• Debriefing

Safety

 Always lock out before performing work

 Machine surface temps may pose a burn hazard
 Operate under positive pressure – release pressure prior
to performing work on any component that could
potentially be pressurized
 Ensure all guards are securely in place
 Report defective or missing guards immediately & tape off
the area for restricted access
 Wear proper hearing protection

Field inspections

 Define the inspections that you have to perform on Rotary

vane compressor
• Field inspections = 1st level inspections, Running equipment

 Work in groups
• 2 groups on rotary vane compressor
• 2 groups on Fuller pumps
• 30 minutes by group, then debriefing

 Use the template
