WHAT IS COMMUNITY?
• A group of people living in the same place or having a particular
characteristic in common.

• A social unit with commonality such as norms, religion, values,


customs, or identity.

IMPORTANCE OF UNDERSTANDING
COMMUNITY
Community situations vary. Thus, each community has
it’s own context and realities. However, without a deep
and wide knowledge of a target community,
interventions, may emerge as exclusive, inappropriate, or
totally insensitive to the members of the community.

organizations.

The base, back-up, and support of the people in the


community

Refers to the population in the community where the


government can’t do specific action/activity without the
support of the community/people.
REWARDS
The ability to provide awards, promotion, money, and gifts
that are useful to meet individual or organizational goals.

Refers to the good image and good feedback of the


community.
PERSONAL TRAITS/ EXPERTISE
The capacity to foster respect and loyalty based on charm, talents and skills.

Refers to the loyalty and respect of the people.

Example: teacher can gain this if he/she is skillful, loyal, generous, and knows how to
socialize
LEGITIMATE POWER

The leadership title or higher organizational or


institutional position.

Appointed position through the power of the people.


INFORMATION
The ability to keep or share information.

The ability to share the information to community or


the transparency of the community.
COERCION
Influence through manipulation and coercion.

It is the practice to persuade someone to do


something with force or threat.

Process of persuading someone forcefully to do something that they do not want to do.
