MAHAYANA BUDDHISM

Mahayana Buddhism is a branch of Buddhism that


is primarily found in East Mahayana Buddhism is a
branch of Buddhism that is primarily found in East Asia,
including countries such as China, Japan, Korea, and
Vietnam. It is one of two major branches of Buddhism,
the other being Theravada Buddhism. Mahayana
Buddhism is based on the teachings of the Buddha and
emphasizes the importance of compassion and wisdom.

What is an example of generosity of
Mahayana Buddhism?

There are three way of practicing generosity according to


Buddhist teaching:
1. Giving material thigs
2. Giving loving protection
3. Giving loving understanding
• Giving material things – the instructions with regard to the
first, giving material things, point to importance of one`s
motivation. Charitable giving should be selfless and so without
ulterior motives, it should also be free from outside pressure,
fear of poverty, and any intention harm

• Giving loving protection – form of generosity involves giving


our loving protection to those who are experiencing fear which
could be fear of others, fear of being sick, fear of dying, or
fear of a catastrophe
• Giving loving understanding – giving loving generosity,
giving loving understanding, pertains to sharing the precious
Dharma, yet this should be done with anyone. Our intent
should also be pure and without any self- centered aims.
Forms of Mahayana Buddhism generosity
- believe to help train the mind in a way conducive
to attaining enlightenment.

Branches and Functions of Buddhism

• Hinaya - refers to the original Buddhist in ancient


India, and contemporary followers of those earliest
traditions.
• Mahayan - contains supernaturalism and a greater
emphasis on acts compassion in the world than the
Hinayana.
• Function of Siddharta Gautama Sutras
• - Sutra (Sanskrit for “thread”)is a written work in the
belief system of Hinduism, Jainism, and Buddhism.
Doctrine: Four Noble Truths, Eight-fold Path, the six
perfections to become a Bodhisattva

• The First Noble Truth- identifiesthe origin of the problem the dukkha. Suffering
can be experienced throughout the different stages of a person`s life- from
birth,sickness, old age, to ultimate death.

• The Second Noble Truth- this explains the cause of suffering or the samodaya-
in craving or desire (or tanha),in the perpetual thirst of humans to consume things,
experiences, or ideas.

• The Third Noble Truth- this asserts that there is a suffering and bondage by
eliminating craving and desire. By dropping the bonds of craving, one gets to be
released from the fundamental nature of reality.
• The Third Noble Truth- this directs an individual to the path or magga leading to
the termination of craving and desire, and to eventual cessation of pain.
Eightfold Path

• Right View---- understand the “Four Noble Truths”


• Right Intention--- free one`s from ill-will, cruelty, and untruthfulness
• Right Speech---- abstain from untruthfulness, tale- bearing, harsh language, and
vain talk
• Right Action--- abstain from killing,stealing, and sexual misconduct
• Right Livelihood--- earn living in a way not harmful to any living thing
• Right Effort--- avoid evil thoughts and overcome them, arouse good thoughts and
maintain them
• Right Mindfulness--- pay vigilant attention to every state of the body, feeling, and
mind
• Right Concentration--- concentrate on a single objects so as to induce certain
special states of consciousness in deep meditation
