 Friday, October 20th 1-4PM at Butler in the Reilly Room


 Student registration is free!
 1st 30 minutes of the showcase reserved for IPA members
 Mostly programs from Indiana and surrounding states

Midyear: What to Expect

 Largest gathering of pharmacists in the world!


 Lots of events – make sure to plan your time!
 Opportunities to:
 Network with other pharmacists, students, and healthcare leaders
 Gain information about various post-graduate opportunities
 Learn new information about clinical, leadership, and health-system topics
 The atmosphere at the conference is fun. But remember – everyone there is a potential future employer!
 Pharmacy is a small world – what happens at Midyear doesn’t stay at Midyear

Midyear: Residency Showcase Tips

 Plan!
 Programs only exhibit during ONE time slot
 Determine which programs you want to visit beforehand
 Review the booth layout and plan your route
 Programs listed by site (not program type offered)
 Know your program-specific questions beforehand
 During the showcase
 5-15 minutes max with each program
 Talk with both residents and preceptors/RPD
 Take notes! You won’t remember all the programs you spoke with at the end of the day
 Take contact information for interesting programs (e.g. business card, brochure, etc.)
Midyear: After

 Send thank you emails
 Residency
 Notify letter writers of your final program list
 Touch base prior to entering into PhORCAS
 Consider sending thank you emails to residents and preceptors that you spoke with (especially if
applying to the program!)
 This is a busy time of year for everyone! Make sure to give yourself (and letter writers)
plenty of time to complete everything.

 Carry a portfolio for notes/promotional material
 If multiple candidates are at a booth with you, make sure to ask your questions but don’t
dominate the conversation
 Don’t chew gum while speaking with others
 Be prepared! Know what questions you want to ask before stepping up to the booth

Questions for Programs: What NOT to Ask

 Information likely to be found on the website and/or other recruitment materials


 Number of residents
 Required and elective rotations
 Other requirements of the program (e.g. staffing, research, teaching)
 Application requirements
 Residency preceptors
 Salary and benefits
 Avoid starting with “tell me about your program”
Questions for Programs: What TO Ask

 Try to come up with a unique first question to ask!


 Information you may want to ask about:
 Process for selecting rotations
 Current employment of past residents
 Details on research project selection/timeline
 Opportunities for student precepting
 Expected amount of preceptor oversight
 Interactions between pharmacists and other healthcare providers
 Relationship between residents and preceptors/program director
 Resident well-being and autonomy
 Delivery of feedback to resident and back to program/preceptors
 Description of pharmacy services (e.g. Inpatient protocols, ambulatory CDTM)
Showcase Attire

 At Midyear, business professional is expected at PPS interviews and the residency


showcase.
 Yes, this means suit coats!
 For other Midyear events and the IPA showcase, attire similar to what is expected on
APPE rotations is acceptable.
 Bring your Butler name tag!
