THE CRY OF BALINTAWAK

• Is an event in which the Filipino started


the first staging act of revolution. The
“Cry” actually refers to the first clash
between the Katipuneros showing their
reform by tearing up their cedulas into
pieces, implicating that they have
pronounced to refuse their enslavement
and servitude with the Spaniards.

THE FIRST CRY OF THE REVOLUTION

• The first cry of the revolution is a


historical event where the Filipinos
tore their cedulas which for Andres
Bonifacio is the sign of the slavery of
the Filipinos to Spaniards.
CHANGES IN MASANGKAY’S NARRATIVE

• On August 26, 1957, in an interview


published in the newspaper
“BAGONG BUHAY”, he said the
revolution began on August 23, 1896,
similar to Dr. Pio Valenzuela.
• Masangkay date was change again
when his grand daughter, Soledad
Buehler-Borromeo cited the sources
included Masangkay’s papers that
the original date was August 26.

• The Cry of Pugad Lawin ( Sigaw ng


Pugad Lawin ), alternately and
originally referred to as the Cry of
Balintawak ( Sigaw ng Balintawak ) was
the beginning of the Philippine
Revolution against the Spanish Empire.
SASTRON ACCOUNT

• The Sastron account as written in the


book of Buehler (1998) described the
“disturbances” which in fact. It was a
full-blown uprising that affected area
far beyond the Balintawak-Caloocan
vicinity.
BRITISH CONSULAR DURING THE FIRST CRY IN
BALINTAWAK

•In 1896, British consular in Manila


was Edward Henry Rawson-Walker
but then he died in service and was
replaced by Vice-Consul Henry
Ramsden Rawson-Walker.
HENRY RAMSDEN WALKER

• Was a Belgian Consul to Manila. His


services were sought by the American
admiral George Dewey in order to
assist in Spain’s surrender of Manila
after the mock Battle in Manila Bay.
SANTIAGO ALVAREZ

• Is the son of Mariano Alvarez and a


relative of Gregoria de Jeses. He was
prominent Katipunan warlord of
Cavite, who also wrote his own version
of the Cry of Balintawak, which he
called it, The “Cry of Bahay-Toro”.
GREGORIA DE JESUS

• Was also involved in the


Philippine Revolution, as she
was the wife of who the
katipuneros call “Supremo”,
A. Bonifacio.

• Spanish Commander of the Guardia


Civil Veterana in Manila has also
included the date of the First Cry in
his official report findings, which he
stated that the Cry happened on
August 25, 1896.
