BM Container depot explosion
& causes of it…..
1. On the night of 4 june 2022, a fire and next explosions
at a container Depot in sitakundu upazila ,Chittagong
district ,Bangladesh killed at least 47 People including 9
fire fighters and wounding 200 others .
2. Financial loss of more than 120 million dollars.
3. Container of Hydrogen Peroxide produced by a smart
group company named Gazi chemical complex limited
were stored at the depot .
4. Weakness in the management of hazardous materials,
including hydrogen peroxide led to the explosion.
Characteristics & properties of
Hydrogen peroxide()
1. Hydogen peroxides is a highly unstable chemical
compound. It consists of two molecules of Hydogen &
oxygen & general formula is () .
2. Hydrogen per oxide is colourless & odorless liquid .
3. It is bitter in taste.
4. The melting point of hydrogen peroxide
is -0.43˚C & boiling point is 150.2˚C
5. It’s highly more viscous than water.
Effects on public health &
environment
Effects on public health:
 While talking to the UNB, physician Abdullah said
that because of this explosion chemical mixed air could
damage the eye, skin, liver and kidneys of the human
body. But this damage caused by the chemical might
happen in the long run.

Environment effect:
 The surrounding areas of the depot might face severe
environmental disaster due to chemical spread from
the spot .
 It will pollute the air system and toxic chemicals mixed
up with the air.
Beirut’s explosion (another example
like BM depot explosion)
 On 4 August 2020, a large amount of ammonium nitrate stored at the
Port of Beirut in the capital city of Lebanon exploded, causing at least
218 deaths, 7,000 injuries, and US$15 billion in property damage, as
well as leaving an estimated 300,000 people homeless. A cargo of 2,750
tones of the substance (equivalent to around 1.1 kilotons of TNT) had
been stored in a warehouse without proper safety measures for the
previous six years after having been confiscated by the Lebanese
authorities from the abandoned ship MV Rhosus. The explosion was
preceded by a fire in the same warehouse
How to avoid this types of explosion

 Conducting pre operational cheeks

 Carrying out preventative maintenance .
 Training workers to understand hazards.
 Segregating chemicals .
 Container depots cannot be set up in densely populated areas .
 Government should be careful about giving permission to the chemical
companies
