THE INDIVIDUAL IN HIS SCHOOL:

-Students/Pupils do not exist in isolation

but in institution contexts. School have
characteristics “climates” or ambience
which does much to influence the
behavior of their students.
-WHAT EVER THE PREVAILING
ETHICS OF THE ACADEMIC
INSTITUTION,IT WILL HAVE A
TREMENDOUS INFLUENCE ON
THE BEHAVIOR OF THE STUDENT.
THE INDIVIDUAL IN HIS HOME

As equally important factor in our

attempt to understand an individual is
his relation and interaction with his
home or abode.
A PRINCIPLE OF CHILD DEVELOPMENT HAS
LONG SUGGESTED THAT THE CHILD’S
HEALTHY INTERACTION WITH HIS
PARENTS IS AN IMPORTANT DETERMINANT
OF HIS TOTAL BEHAVIOR
The individual in his community

Community conditions are of great importance in

securing an understanding of individual students and
in developing effective self-concepts among them.
Differences in the social status of families of different
groups of often are manifested in the attitudes of
different groups of high-school students towards one
another.
PSYCHOLOGICAL BARRIERS
1. There are certain psychological barriers that may impede
guidance counseling progress toward understanding an
individual. Young people, especially adolescents are
reluctant to reveal and expose their real selves. Because of
the intensely personal or private nature of our lives, it is –
difficult and even impossible – to have complete empathy
for another person; that is to feel what I would be like to be
in his position. Finally, because individuals change,
guidance counselors can never be sure that their
understanding is up to date- the student/pupil in June is not
the same student that December
DIFFICULLY IN Understanding Another
Person
Real understanding of another person
involves an unusual ability to put oneself
sympathetically and intelligently in his place.
At the same
time one must stand and apart and be
impersonal. The privacy of the individual
must be respected.
Individual change

One difficulty in dealing with adolescent is that he

is constantly changing even from day to day. As a
consequence , by the time data are obtained and
recorded, he has change, and the data are important
only as they show a developmental picture of the
student. Such a picture is important, but it does not
tell us what he is now.
Social Changes are Barriers to Understanding

Great and rapid changes in our society increased

the difficulty of our understanding across the
generation. Adults and adolescence live in two
different worlds. The meaning of work, the role of the
family, religion, and morals , the philosophy of school
have all undergone considerable transformation
during this century. These changes impede the
understanding which is so essential for the function of
The Family Changes
In any consideration of the present difficulty in the
guidance of youth the changes in the home and
community should be kept on mind. In most present
day homes there is no longer the same amount of
intimate interrelationship hat once was present. The
increase tempo of life has to often materially reduced
or even eliminate the time or the opportunity for such
relationship.
Aids in understanding
Man techniques are needed to help us understand youth. Such
an understanding cannot be attained merely by watching what
they are doing. We must know the reasons and motives that
impel them to ac as they do. This level of understanding
requires close and systematic personal relationship over a
reasonably long period of time. The problem is made more
difficult because youth may not understand themselves
therefore and are unable to give much direct help to adults who
are striving to learn more about them.
