Abstract
Making a poster in PowerPoint is quite straight forward.
You can use this file as a template or you can create your
own from scratch. In this example I’ve included the
headings that will need to go on the poster.
Introduction
Print your poster in colour! You will producing your
poster on a single A4 sheet.
Submit your finished poster on an A4 sheet
(Powerpoint Slide) along with your dissertation in the
portals provided on Moodle and also email them to
your supervisor by the 20th May 2019. You will not be
orally presenting your poster – submit the poster
(Powerpoint slide) at the same time as dissertation.
USE THIS POWERPOINT TEMPLATE AS YOUR
STARTING POINT FOR THE POSTER.
Since you’re producing the poster at A4 size you need to
take account of the size of your text and graphics. Times
font at size 9 is used here, it may seem very small but it
will be readable in A4 format when you print this slide
from MS powerpoint. Any text size between 9 and 12
should be sufficient for body text, and between 12 and 16
for section headings.
The effective use of graphics can draw readers to your
poster and help get your message across.
Method
The text on this poster has been laid out in individual text
boxes. Text boxes are created with the Text Box button in
the Insert option
You can adjust the shape and size of the text boxes to fit
them around any graphics you place on your poster. I’ve
created a landscape layout of three columns, but you don’t
have to adhere strictly to this design.
PowerPoint allows effective use of colour for
presentation. Use Background Styles... in the Design
menu to set the background colour of your poster. If
you’re using this file as a template try to change the
background colour.
Results
You may want to make your columns stand out from the
background as I have done with the middle column. I
have created a large blue rectangle from the Insert tab
and sent it behind the elements that make up the column
using right-click of the mouse and Send to Back. You
can use the right-click and choose Format Shape to set
the line and fill colour of any drawing element.
Discussion
Some word of advice:
Choose a common font such as Times, Arial, Verdana
or Georgia.
Don’t use Unusual Fonts that you may have on your PC
as we may not have the same fonts available on the Mac
where we’re printing the poster.
Keep a high contrast between your text and background.
It’s best to keep the background pale has this reduces the
amount of ink required to print the poster.
Remember that a poster should be factual and concise.
Don’t get too involved in the fine detail of your research.
If you find you need to use a font size of 8 or less, you’ve
probably got too much content, so do some editing.
You may find it easier to type your text in Word first and
then paste it into PowerPoint.
The placement of graphics on a poster can help make it
interesting to the reader. Try to include images that are
relevant to your area or theme. You can also copy graphs
from SPSS, or include your own tables, (or the word
cloud from NVivo) and paste them into your results
section.
