Project 5
Objective:
To learn how to combine text and
imagery to create well-designed,
arresting and compelling book cover
designs for a fiction book of your
choice.
Technical/Aesthetic Goals:
Utilizing what you have learned
thus far about image creation and
technique, and combining it with the
new information demonstrated with
InDesign and typography, create three
book covers for a book which inspires
you. Your designs should achieve unity
between text and image to the point
where neither can exist without the
other. Your typography (especially title)
must be cohesive with the imagery, yet
still be readable.
Procedure:
Start by selecting a book which you
have read and that you find particularly
memorable. This can be something
you have read recently or as a child.
Check on Amazon Books for the
height and width of your book.
Create a new cover for this book which
addresses your perception of its implied
message. N.B.The file must have the same
height and width dimensions as your book.
When you open Photoshop to create a new
document choose the height and width of
your book. Keep the ppi at 200 and
Deadlines: orientation /Portrait. This new Photoshop
Doc will be the container for the composite
Roughs are due on 4-28. Finals cover that you will create. Create three
are due on 5-5. DIFFERENT covers for your book.
DO NOT ADD THE TITLE AND AUTHOR
inPhotoShop.
These will be added later in INDesign
Your final design must utilize text and
image. Feel free to use what you have
learned so far about image creation in
Photoshop and Illustrator.
Do not mix Illustrator vectors in with
photographic images. You may use
imagery created with these
applications separately, however, your
final design’s text and design file must
be created with InDesign. e.g You can
have a cover created in Illustrator and
a couple others created in Photoshop
or you can have all Photoshop covers.
Open InDesign.
Create a New document of the SAME
Height and width AS YOUR BOOK.
Create three new pages
FILE/PLACE, This will allow you to
navigate over to your first PS Cover.
Select it .THEN
Align your cursor in the top left corner
of your INDesign document and click.
If your PS cover is created to the same
size as your inDesign document it will
fit perfectly.
Now you are ready to Use the Type
Tool to complete your book cover.
Remember Visual Hierarchy. What is
the most Important, The title or the
Author? Make sure you have enough
contrast for them to be readable.
Chose the best FONT for the
personality of your book. Choose
different fonts for each book cover.
Do this for all three of your covers
SAVING- crucial to understand in
Indesign To save you must choose
<<FILE/PACKAGE.>>
accept all the default settings in each
window. It will generate a
folder(package) containing the
InDesign Document, plus a subfolder
with all your images, a subfolder with
all your fonts. AND A .PDF
The .pdf is what I need you turn in on
the new class folder.
Once generated ONLY open the
indesign file from inside its packaged
folder. Then it will find all the images
and fonts.
