Assignment 8 Varieties of Shape

• Cut out a variety of rectilinear, curvilinear, biomorphic, and
amorphous shapes from black sheets of paper.
• Create four different 4" x 4" black/white (positive/negative
shape) compositions, all crafted out of shapes cut from the
black pieces of paper. Try different combinations. Consider
what kind of shape is emphasized in each:
1. One emphasizing rectilinear shapes
2. One emphasizing curvilinear shapes
3. One emphasizing organic shapes
4. One that doesn’t emphasize any one in particular
• Use other sheets of paper and/or a photocopier or phone
camera to create thumbnail compositions before deciding
upon the final arrangement. Whatever process you decide to
use, document it carefully in your sketchbook. Describe your
design decisions at each step in your small journal.
