DES 121

Fall 2019

WEEK 1 Introduction to Design Process

Objectives
• Develop design thinking through iterative processes and
divergent thinking
• Deliberate practice - Drawing with graphite, measuring, gluing

Assignment 1 Nine Beautiful Squares

• Draw a grid of 1” squares on the back of your page of writing
using a 2H pencil.
• Cut out the squares with an X-acto knife.
• Select the 9 “most beautiful” squares.
• Divide the next sheet of sketchbook paper in half horizontally.
Measure carefully with your ruler, and faintly draw the dividing
line with a 2H pencil.
• In the top half, arranged these nine squares into the
composition of your choice.
• In the bottom half, carefully draw a positive negative reversal
using a 2H pencil. Sharpen the pencil frequently to keep the
tip as sharp as possible. Layer the softer graphite of the 2B
pencil over the graphite of the more dense 2H pencil to darken
the value. Do this again with the 4B pencil. Again, keep both
pencils sharp. The black areas should be as dark and solid as
you can possibly make them without indenting the paper. If
you can feel a bump on the back side, you’re applying too
much pressure.
