WEEK 1 Introduction to Design
Objectives
• Develop design thinking through iterative processes
and divergent thinking
• Deliberate practice - Drawing with graphite,
measuring, gluing
• Participate in a descriptive and analytical
dialog through critiques
Assignment 2 Nine Ugly Squares
Step 1 Iterations
• Divide the page into 3 equal horizontal sections.
• In the top section, draw 9 equal rectangles that are
proportional to each of these sections.
• The rectangles must be small enough to fit in the
top third of the page, but large enough to draw in.
• Space them evenly, so they form a grid with an
equal measure of space between each rectangle.
• In each small rectangle create a composition by
drawing nine small squares that roughly represent
the ones you selected. These are thumbnails.
Step 2 Feedback
• Trade sketchbooks with a classmate.
• Take 1-2 minutes to look at their thumbnails.
• Draw a small mark next to the one you think is best.
• They will do the same in your sketchbook.
• Discuss your choices.
• Select the one you think is best.
Step 3 Commit to the Composition
• In the middle section re-create your thumbnail using
the 9 least beautiful squares.
• Glues them carefully in the center of the page.
Step 4 See at it Differently
• In the bottom section draw a positive / negative
reversal of your composition.
• Begin with your 2H pencil.
• Then layer 2B and 4B pencil over the 2H.
Assignment 3 Fifteen Squares
Step 1 Iterations
• Select 15 more squares.
• Create a 3 square x 5 square grid, spacing the
squares ¼” apart on both axes.
• Rearrange the squares within the grid 10 times.
• Photocopy each iteration.
• Adhere the photocopies on a single sheet of
sketchbook paper so they create a flipbook.
• The strongest composition should be on top.
Step 2 Commit to the Composition
• On the next sheet of sketchbook paper, glue the
squares in this gridded composition.
• Center this arrangement on the page.
Step 3 See at it Differently
• On the next sheet draw a positive / negative reversal
as in the previous assignment.
Homework
Due at beginning of class on Tuesday
