Basic Shape Still Life Painting

Purpose: To learn basic painting skills

Materials: Support - gessoed, watercolor paper stretched on plywood; staple gun;


water-soluble oil paints or acrylics; palette; drafting or easy release tape;
basic still life objects

Select one of the five choices to paint:


1. Black and white study of white forms (value study)
2. Monochromatic study of white forms (value study)
3. Analogous study of white forms (harmonious)
4. Full palette study of colorful basic forms
5. Full palette study of complex forms

Procedure: 1. Sketch and gesso watercolor paper.


2. Create sketch with viewfinder, drafting or easy-release tape for
borders, graphite, charcoal, or dilute paint.
3. Measure with pencil to get angles and proportions.
4. Block-in with dilute paint.
Plaster Cast Still Life Painting

Purpose: To learn basic painting skills

Materials: Support - gessoed, watercolor paper stretched on plywood; staple gun;


water-soluble oil paints or acrylics; palette; drafting or early release tape;
plaster cast still life object(s)

Select one of the five choices to paint:


1. Black and white study
2. Monochromatic study
a. Students can add one color to make it monochromatic
b. Example
i. Raw umber
3. Cool/Warm study
a. Examples
i. Warm color - burnt sienna
ii. Cool color - ultramarine blue
iii. White and black

Procedure: 1. Sketch and gesso watercolor paper.
