3 TRIMESTERS

OF PREGNANCY

What are trimesters of
pregnancy?

A pregnancy is divided into trimesters such as the


FIRST TRIMESTER is from week 1 to the end of
week 12.

SECOND TRIMESTER is from week 13 to the end


of week 26.

THIRD TRIMESTER is from week 27 to the end of


pregnancy

TRIMESTER:
BABY DEVELOPMENT:

 In the first 13 weeks baby changes


from a fertilized egg into a fully
formed fetus.

 The fertilized egg becomes a cluster


of dividing cells. Placenta, umbilical
cord all begin to grow.

 Nervous system changes from open


neutral tube to brain and spinal cord.
1st
TRIMESTER:
BABY DEVELOPMENT:

 The heart takes shape and begins to


beat. It can be heard on ultrasound as
early as 6 weeks.

 Heart rate is 120 to 160 times per


min.

 A soft skeleton starts to develop.

 Genitals start to grow but its too


early to tell if it’s a boy or girl.
2nd
TRIMESTER:
BABY DEVELOPMENT:

 By the end of second trimester baby


is 13 to 16 inches long

 It weighs about 2 pounds.

 The fetus kicks and turns from side


to side.

 The fetus can now hear your voice.

 The fetus develops reflexes like


suckling and swallowing.
2nd
TRIMESTER:
BABY DEVELOPMENT:

 Placenta is now fully


developed.

 Fingerprints and toeprints are


developed.

 Fingernails have grown and


fingers and toes are fully
separated
3rd
TRIMESTER:
BABY DEVELOPMENT:

 Fetus begins to position


itself head down.

 By the end of the 3rd


trimester baby is about 19 to
21 inch long.

 Baby weighs about 6 to 9


pounds.

 Kidneys and lungs continue


to mature

TRIMESTER:
BABY DEVELOPMENT:

 Fetus can suck thumb and can cry

 By 30 to 40 weeks lungs have


matured completely.

 The baby is covered in caseosa or


simply called vernix which is a
creamy, protective coating on skin.

POSITIONS OF
THE BABY
The baby has the following
positions during the nine months:

i. Anterior position, when the


head is on the opening of the
vagina.
ii. Breech position, when head is
opposite of the opening of
vagina

iii. Transverse position, when the


baby is in the laying position.
THE POSTPARTUM PERIOD
This is the period after the baby has been delivered.
This period is 6 to 8 weeks long. During tis postpartum period the mother may have to face
some discomfort which are as follows:

 The mother has to move her body and walk even when she has insufferable pain. This is
practiced so that the blood in her arms and legs does not coagulate.

 The placenta gets detached and come out by the time.

 The mother may have heavy bleeding for more than 2 hours.

 The mother may also sense a bad smelling discharge.

 The mother may feel pain while peeing.
