SAMRAKSHANA ELECTRICALS LIMITED

Established in the year 1987

Technical collaboration with Westinghouse

Electric Corporation, U.S.A

An associate company of M/s Vijai Electricals

Limited, who are the biggest transformer
manufactures in India.
Samrakshana Electricals Limited is a Transmission
and Distribution components manufacturing Division
established with an intention to manufacture and
supply consistent quality components / products to
it’s parent company Vijai Electricals Limited.
Samrakshana Electricals Limited stared exporting
Oil immersed Circuit Breakers used for Completely
Self Protected (CSP) Distribution transformers to
USA in the year 1996.
Samrakshana Electricals Limited is only the company
manufacturing Circuit Breakers for CSP Distribution
Transformers in India.

CSP Concept
 Completely Self Protected Distribution Transformer protection
system provides as complete a transformer over current
protection package as is practical with the entire system
contained in the Distribution Transformer

 CSP protection system protects the Transformer from :

1 . Severe overloads

2. Secondary faults

3. Lightning induced surges

4. Provides visual warning of prevailing uneconomical

loading conditions

5 . Protects the distribution system from line “Lock -

Out“ in the event of a transformer failure – internal fault
CSP PHILOSOPHY
TRANSFORMER PROTECTION - A Distribution transformer
should be protected from faults and overloads, which would
shorten its life . A failed transformer in the present times
would practically affect everyone, be it a farmer, an industry, a
commercial establishment, a hospital, domestic consumers etc.

SYSTEM PROTECTION - An electric distribution system

should be protected from a Transformer that has failed so that
the fault is isolated to the failed transformer and affects only
the customers who are served by the failed transformer.
TRANSFORMER ECONOMICS - It is not economical to
operate a distribution transformer on a regular basis, in an
overload condition. High failure rate of Non-CSP distribution
transformer, excessive repair bills, plus organizational and
logistics complexities of maintenance and repair demands for
a CSP kind of protection system.

LIGHTNING PROTECTION - Lightning protection is

maximized when the lightning arrester is directly mounted to
the transformer tank reducing to a minimum the impedance
of the ground condition.
WHY CSP ?
Transformer life increases because of over load and fault
protection
Distribution system is protected from a Transformer that has
failed (Line Lock-Out)
High failure rate of Non CSP Transformer
1. Excessive repair bills
2. Organizational and Logistic Complexities
of Maintenance
Lightning Protection (Surge Arrestor )
Benefits of CSP
Higher Transformer availability
CSP Transformer is available for a longer duration than conventional
transformers. The internal breaker is tripped by a thermal bimetal which
integrates oil temperature and the secondary current flow. This allows the
transformer to continue to operate even under over load conditions until
such time that the oil temperature makes coil damage eminent.

Lower installed cost – Low system cost

Installed Cost = Purchase Price Of transformer + Cost Of Other Equipments
Required (Cross Arm, Lightning Arrestor, Cut Out)
+ Manpower Cost For Installation + Repair Costs

Connections in non CSP

a) primary – lightning arrestor
b) lightning arrestor – cut out
c) cut out – transformer
d) lightning arrestor ground- transformer ground
Easier and simpler installation
In the CSP installation only one major piece of equipment, the
transformer is installed on the pole and the only high voltage
connection to be made is between the transformer and the primary
line.

In case of Non-CSP installation two other major pieces of equipment

viz. Lightning arrestor & cut out must also be mounted. Additional
complexity of non CSP installation increases possibility of making
mistakes and requires a high skill level installation crew.

A non CSP installation takes as twice as long to complete as a CSP

installation

More reliable service (Load Management)

The early warning feature of the CSP transformer via the signal light
helps the electric utility company to increase the reliability of the
electrical service.
Load management Similar
Peak load
conditions

Why transformers fail?

a) load management inconsistency created by high diversity factors
b) Inconsistent quality of transformer components

• CSP efficiently and effectively disconnects the load from the transformer
under overload circumstances.
• CSP components help the utilities to identify location where improvements
from Load management may be required.
Aesthetic Look
The simplicity of the CSP presents a much cleaner and
uncluttered appearance

Short circuit protection

As the CQR breaker is fitted with magnetic trip element which
trips the breaker within a few cycles (6 cycles to be precise) it
protects components of the transformers from short circuit
currents

High degree of personal safety for the repairmen.

Safer operation
Circuit breaker provides the type of protection which will
prevent excessive oil temperatures and / or severe damage to
the transformer insulation system. In case of Non-CSP
transformers temperatures reach dangerously high levels and
damage the insulation. In some cases there was harm to the
repairman and loss of property while the repairman tried to
put the cut out with an internal fault in the transformer.

When a severe failure does occur within the CSP transformer

the internal primary fuse operates –the operation of this fuse
is a signal to the repairman that a severe fault has taken place
and that the transformer must be replaced.
CSP Features / Components
 Oil immersed Circuit Breaker
Connected in series with low voltage winding. Protects the transformer from
secondary side faults and overloads.

 Signal Light
Provides visual warning that the transformer is getting overloaded

 Primary HV Protective Link

Protects the distribution system ahead of the transformer in the event of
transformer internal faults - Line lock out

 Lightning arrester
directly mounted on the transformer primary bushing. Surge protection is
maximized as the lightning arrester is directly mounted on the transformer
tank

 External operating handle

Resetting mechanism

 Emergency Control
Optional feature to take care of emergency loads
Oil immersed Circuit Breaker
 Mounted inside the transformer and is connected
between the secondary winding and the secondary
bushings, such that, the load current flows
through the circuit breaker.

Main Elements

1. Magnetic Trip - Instantaneous tripping

element
2. latching and Tripping - Mechanical

linkages
3. Temp. Sensing - Thermal trip (Bimetallic

strips)
4. Current interrupting – copper current
carrying parts + a set of copper tungsten
current interrupting contacts
Signal Light
 Mounted on the wall of the transformer tank

 Signal Light Circuit is mechanically connected to

the Circuit breaker latching and bimetal systems
through an auxiliary contact
 Signal light circuit consists of an Auxiliary
winding. which generates about 4 V
 Signal light contact set within the Circuit Breaker

 Contacts close at a preset thermal condition

considered to be the economic loading point
which occurs before the main latching system
opens the main contacts.

Net result – Visual External indication

HV Protective link
 Placed in series with primary winding.

 Protects the part of the dist system ahead of

the transformer from internal faults

 Fault in the winding causes abnormally large

currents to flow causing the fuse to melt open
thereby clearing the circuit.

 Fuse operates only when the transformer is no

longer usable.

 Any fault ahead of the transformer will not be

seen by any of the transformers internal
protective devices and will have to be cleared
by some other protective devices up-stream
from the transformers
Lightning Arrestor

 Protects the transformer from insulation

damage caused by lightning induced surges

 Diverts the flow of surge current to earth by

changing its impedance characteristics from
High to low resistance and back, once the
surge is diverted.
