• Year of construction- 1926-1928

• Client- Konsumverein (co-operative society)

• Current status- Tower remains to serve as a

residence & low rise section hosts a permanent
exhibition
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
• Exhibits a simple, cubic architecture sparingly
articulated by constructional details.

• Due to its location and its tower block, it formed the

centre of the new housing estate.

• Consists of two interlocking volumes: a low-rise

section and a 5-storey tower
• Both seem to blend into one another and their
proportions are elegantly attuned.

• The functionalistic and simple architectural language

emphasises the block-like shapes of the two parts.
• The five-storey tower is made of rendered brickwork,
unlike other surrounding structures.

• The flat-roofed structure of concrete reinforced with

steel.

• The darker window frames and balcony railings offer

contrast to the white façades.

• Facing the street, the low-rise part of the building has a

storefront window façade.
• Contained a cooperative retail shop for groceries and
other goods, and it also housed a small café.

• The five-storey block housed staff rooms, and above

these, three three-roomed flats & common area on the
top floor included a laundry room, drying-room and a
roof terrace.

• The staircase windows add interest to the tower and

emphasise its verticality.

unornamented purism of elemental forms and
proportions.

• The interior of the building retains many of Gropius

original design concepts.

• Significant both for the quality of its architectural

design and its. inclusion in a collection of important
suburban Jewish properties.
• Contains several significant works of art, including a
pair of glass mosaic murals on opposite sides of the
entrance lobby by Gyorgy Kepes.

• Its particular form derives from the suburbanization of

the Jewish population in Baltimore.

• The complex is a multi-functional building that

includes spaces for worship, social activities,
administration facilities, and a school.

• Featured an innovative plan that placed the sanctuary

and social hall on the same axis to gather & seat over
2000 people.

• Its architectural distinction and historical significance

make this resource worthy of designation.
